How many of you DO NOT experience buffetting and vibration problem?

2005 XL w/ Michelin Defender 265/70R17...cruise a smooth 80/85 weekly. You all convinced me to just keep what I got rather then take a chance on something new & worse!!!
My 2017 and 18 both cruise 80-85 perfectly fine. Couldn’t pay me to drive something without side airbags again. So you definitely wouldn’t be in something new and worse lol

My 2016 Denali, on factory 275/55R20 Continentals cruises smoothly at 85. I was going to level up front by 2" and go to the PPV front valance, because I backed out of a driveway the other day and it scraped like crazy - didn't even feel steep, but backing out it caught good. Not sure I'm going to do either, anymore. It rides so nicely as-is...

I get some buffeting with just my driver window down, but I've driven a lot of cars like that... I crack some other windows and it evens out.

At idle I think there is a bit of vibration about every 2 or 3 seconds, but I chalk that up to the rhythm of the large engine.

Just so you are aware those are normal so you’re all good. The Buffetting issue occurs with all windows up and the vibration occurs at 75+ and shakes your steering wheel.

There should be a sticky on this IMO so folks know what to look for but alas there isn’t...

No buffeting or vibration issues at all through any speed. I used to get the “booming” sounds though with my stock 20’s. Now with my 24’s and Nitto 420s tires that seems to have gone away.

2017 Yukon I have done 80-85mph on my stock 18” wheels and my new 22” wheels and no vibrations of any sort. Thankfully cause I really like the Yukon I would hate to trade it in cause of this issue

so I haven't visited this thread in years...luckily never had the described issues in my 2015

the other day I removed the roof rack crossbars so I could trade it in. On the highway I immediately noticed the booming and weird noises that I've always heard about. really freaked me out.

Tahoe had 42,200 miles. 2 sets of tires. 265/65R18 factory Goodyear crap. Replaced with 265/70R18 General Grabber AT2.

fast forward to the 2017 Suburban I just bought. it did not have the crossbars. driving home I got some annoying noise and whatnot. Immediately installed the crossbars from the Tahoe. The next day I had Dealership swap my brand new tires from Tahoe onto the Burb. I've since put another 250 miles on the Burb. No further weird noises.

Burb had 265/65R18 factory rubber up front and some 265/65R18 Michelins out back. So maybe those tires were the Burb issue

Could the crossbars create some sort of wind deflection that perhaps negates issues that cause the Booming/vibrations?

I have often wondered that, although, I thought it would make it happen, not negate it. On the other hand, I have the cross bars and no noise. I have also wondered about what the difference would be with a sunroof. Less roof line to flex???


I thought about starting a thread and poll but never got around to it.

Interesting. One of the ‘fixes’ to the buffetting is to re secure the roof cross members if they detached. Since cross bars on a rack act similarly to roof beams perhaps they help keep things from flexing and buffetting.

Who knows. Certainly not GM lol.

a couple years back a lot of folks tried different things to see if it would help with the buffeting and the racks never did much. I drove ours a few months without and and after installing them it didn't help much, if any. We could still feel/hear the buffeting. The michelins and road force balancing made the biggest difference.
