I have a 2003 yukon xl slt with 236k on it, I'm slowly but surely fixing it up but I'm not sure if to do a transmission fluid change at this high mileage, I have no previous service record for it but I've had it for 6 months and have no transmision problems whatsoever, it's my daily driver, so I'm wondering if changing it would cause any damage to the tranny.

Also the transmission fluid is still lightly red/brownish color

I think you'd be ok to drop the pan and change the filter. However in my experience I'd advise against a transmission flush. If the fluid still looks decent that is good.

Would I be okay with buying a filter from like a local store like autozone or does it have to be a specific brand filter only available from a website or a dealer, and also be okay using castrol transmax dexron vi premium synthetic blend

Sorry for sounding like a newbie it's just that I had one bad experience with changing the filter and fluid on one of my old vehicles, let's just say it never shifted the same again

I like Napa for the filter and gasket. Make sure the gasket is rubber at least they work way better than cork. As for fluid as long as it's dex 5 or better I believe you're fine. I have a plug on my pan so I drain it every year out of convenience. I would check the manual on the fluid though I can't remember off hand.

The manual calls for Dex-3 but that was superseded by Dexron-6 back in 2006 or so. Dex6 is backwards compatible & light years ahead of Dex3 in all aspects including protection & lubrication.

Did the fluid change, luckily I didn't mess anything up or have any slippage between 2-3 after doing it[emoji119]

Here’s what my tranny guy says. Do a flush if under 150k AND NO PROBLEMS. Sorry for yelling. He won’t do one and tries to stay away from fluid changes on them too. I’m not sure I agree with that. If the fluid is good drain or drop it get a good filter and gasket and measure how much you take out so you know how much to put back and look for any metal in the pan. Stay away from tranny fix products no matter how shiny the bottle.

No flush, but you will be fine with a drain/fill/new filter. You will notice a difference. I would do the same in front and rear diff.
