OEM Engine Block heater

Besides the obvious benefits for block heaters before cold start up, the other advantages most don't talk about is that short commute times are very ******* vehicles. The cold engine operation for a short distance does not evaporate moisture that accumulates in the engine oil and the transmission. The transmission benefits by warming up quickly from the higher coolant temp in the radiator through the oil to water heat exchanger. The exhaust system also lasts longer since hotter coolant temp gets the engine to "closed loop" operation using the O2 sensors, which cannot function in open loop mode. The acids that settle in the exhaust system during cold operation can cause damage to many exhaust parts.

And finally, most engine wear occurs during that warm up period. So, thanks for a great write up and we will continue to rationalize that such a small expenditure really does have a financial payback.

I installed a block heater in my 2010 Yukon Denali last month. I removed the temperature sensor and rolled the dice.

Several weeks later, I've had no issues. We've had temperatures as low as the single digits and as high as the low 30's while I've had the heater plugged in. To realize the full benefits at lower temperatures, it's best to have the heater plugged in for 10-12 hours. This may be due to the size of the motor. I have an F250 with a gas 7.4L motor and it has two OEM block heaters.

When the Denali isn't plugged in, I can hear the top of the engine clicking prior to the oil making it through the system. When plugged in, that disappears.

With 117,000 miles on the truck, I feel much better about cold start ups. The warm cabin after only 2-3 minutes of warm up is a terrific side effect.

Knock on wood, no check engine light as of yet............
