I have a T-Mobile unlimited plan that includes HotSpot so have no need for the OnStar one. Just have the basic plan for now but definitely wish OnStar had a cheaper option, I think most of use would pay for it. You’re absolutely correct. I was mixing up xm and onstar.

Can you use the app with the basic plan? I really like the app and remote crash assistance. I’d prefer a att hotspot but we use Verizon for our phones so that’s not a super easy option.

Yep, you can use the app but will lose the vehicle status page as well as tracking the vehicle if you don't have one of the other paid plans.

Given the capabilities of today's smartphones, I suspect that days are numbered for costly features like OnStar, Navigation, and Sirius/XM.

When I get in my '16 Tahoe LTZ, I put my Droid on the charger pad, then instruct it to "talk to me". That puts the phone in hands-free mode for calls, navigation, Googling, Pandora, Blue tooth on/off, etc, etc.

If I want navigation displayed on the infotainment screen, I plug in the USB cable, and run Android Auto.

Consequently, OnStar, SiriusXM, and OEM navigation have zero value to me. I suspect that in the very near future, we will see these features fade into oblivion...at least for smartphone users.

The value to you is minimal, the value to onstar is a lot. They love to sell your usage stats to anyone that can use them. I see them continuing to add "value" to their packages to dress them up a bit, so that people will keep using the system. Personally, for many reasons, it's not for me.
