Anyone have this issue? I remote start my 2007 Yukon XL Denali from the garage and I get a slight grind right after the engine fires. Engine runs just fine even at -5 to 20 degrees outside right now but its just that 1-2 seconds after initial fire. Here is a youtube video of the exact sound on someone elses truck.

Thoughts? Thanks

Sounds like starter gear not retracting fast enough because its cold. Technically i guess it could break the teeth on the starter gear and flex plate but its prob just catching. You can try some type of penetrating oil in starter where the gear is but it might be a pia to get to.

I just had to do mine for the same thing. Previous owner had a dealership install a reman starter ($340 part) @ 99k miles. I'm at 156k now and mine had issues like yours in the cold and started to mushroom the tip of the starter gear. Got a new AcDelco one for $140, I went with the Professional series. Cranks a hell of a lot faster now and starts immediately.

Does it do it when you start it normally? If not, the remote starter may still be sending voltage to the starter for a second after the engine starts.

Hmmm that is an interesting thought. It is now 40 degrees out and remote starting it does not produce the grind. Really only happens when it is well below freezing.

But have you tried key starting it in the cold to see if it does it? That’ll tell you for sure if remote or not

Solenoid is going bad. Cold weather makes it harder to engage
