I have a 2001 Tahoe with the 9 speaker (non Bose) sound sytem and will be installing a single DIN aftermarket head unit. I have read in several forums about bypassing the factory amplifier so the rear speakers can be powered by the head unit (or something to that effect... it's not exactly clear in some posts what is accomplished and why/how). So I have several questions really --
-What exactly is gained by bypassing the factory amp (so, using the aftermarket deck power instead) and -Will this disable the subwoofer in the rear?
-Will this disable the tweeters in the front doors? (are they crossed over and powered at the amp)
-If I do bypass the factory amp, which wiring harnesses do I need in order to do so? This site says 71-2002 and 70-2002. Is this correct for my 2001 Tahoe?

Thanks in advance

Looks like this one is dead at this point. It would appear no one else has encountered these problems or questions.

better power. the Bose amp lowers the bass the louder you go, etc.... Just better all around to do this

-Will this disable the subwoofer in the rear?

Yes

-Will this disable the tweeters in the front doors? (are they crossed over and powered at the amp)

Yes

Not sure. I would use the MetraOnline.com webiste, but usually people just wired it up on their own with regular speaker wire.

As far as I know, nobody makes a plug and play harness to bypass the factory amp. You either need to decipher the wiring harnesses at the amp and bypass the amp, or else just run new speaker wires from the new stereo to each door speaker.

This is correct -- there is nothing plug and play per se, but there are two wiring harnesses (the two I referenced) you can install and rig to bypass the amp. Perhaps I will only bypass the rear speakers so the front speakes and tweets still stay active and the sub stays active. Did I just answer my own question? Not fully, but close. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply Nathan -- I have the non-bose setup but I suppose your answers still apply?
