Has anyone relocated their rear view mirror?

Well this thread crashed and burned....

Seriously, though.... There's nothing so personal about this. We all like to understand the reasons behind mods because, well, a lot of times it's a good idea and a bunch of guys say "hey, good thinking.. Im gonna do that, too!" if someone came in and asked "how do I make my gas door open the opposite way?", everyone would first say, 'wtf do you wanna do that for?'

I was just curious about the subject as a whole. I didn't know cops could be ON DUTY in their own cars but have to pay to make their cars up to spec for ON DUTY work.

Just and interesting subject. No witch hunt here.

The words "off duty" is used around here as jargon amongst POs reference working extra duty jobs on the side provided via the department. So no, the department, is not calling it an "off duty", they call it extra duty. Mistake on my part using our own jargon on this site thinking you guys would know what I was referring to. In my department we are not allowed to work any extra side jobs police related with out the department's prior knowledge or approval. Actually it just doesn't happen. With the amount of extra side work (off-duties) they provide there's no need to. I believe the term "off-duties" came about because it was paid police services in addition to our regular shifts. In other words working the gigs during our "off-duty" hours.

If this was a witch hunt at trying to find a "whacker" or a wannabe cop posing with his PPV Tahoe then you guys need to look elsewhere. I didn't know I was going to get the 3rd degree on here by simply asking a rear view mirror question but I am more than happy to clarify for you guys which in actuality I shouldn't have to because it's no ones business.

By no means am I bashing you. My thought behind all of it is we have enough civil liability as it is. A lot of small departments do some shady stuff, not saying yours does.

We call anything done in a uniform on duty. If it's an extra assignment (same stuff you describe) we call it contracted extra duty. The reason, the agency gets a piece of the pie because of the liability. Everything today is liability mitigation. The days of common sense and benefit of the doubt are out the window. Seems elementary, but if you've been an LEO for that long, you know defense attorneys will latch onto any BS to try and sway the jury.

We have take home cars, which I get not every agency has the luxury, but I think it's pretty absurd they'd ask you guys to drive your personal vehicle somewhere for a work duty while in uniform. Especially in today's environment.
