I tow a 26 ft Travel Trailer with a 2016 Yukon XL SLT (w/max tow package). The Yukon XL is rated for 8000lbs, although the GVWR of my trailer is only 6000lbs.
The Yukon tows the trailer fine.
I do use a weight distribution hitch.

Just curious when you say it "does ok" towing... was there something that made it more difficult? I'm looking at a similar camper and SUV setup. Trying to figure out which tows better, the pre 15 models tow or the 15+.

What rear is in your Suburban?

2007 Suburban with 171k miles. I have added Airlift 1000 airbags to the rear and I'm in the process of installing a Trucool 40k transmission cooler.

The "does ok" is I wish I had gotten a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck if I knew i was going to be towing. I got the Suburban because I wanted a Rolling Lazyboy couch I love the comfort and we didnt plan on getting a camper. Before the airbags the ride was a bit dodgy. Airbags made a huge difference. I also run them at 10Lb's when not towing and it feels better around town. The 5.3 is very under powered for this size trailer. I wish I had a 6.0 6.2 or a diesel.
In the next 2 years I'm going to be upgrading and I'm probably going to get a 1 ton dually because my wife has no plans on slowing down with camping and I want a stable platform for towing.

What is the rear axle ratio? There should be an RPO code of GU6 for 3.42 or GU4 for the 3.08 in the glovebox. Pretty sure those are the codes.

Have you noticed any bucking or bouncing when towing? We just got back from a trip and our '15 Yukon XL SLT was acting terribly trying to pull a 3500lb popup trailer. I've had other Tahoes and Yukons in the past with out this issue.

Did you have a weight distribution hitch on?

Well the Transmission cooler works frigging amazing. Temps went from 240* to never going above 195 on steep grades. My brakes/wheel hubs on the other hand did not like one of the hills we went down and my right front wheel is making a grinding noise when i turn to the left now. So I have to get the nose in the air again and see whats going on. A 1 ton truck pickup is in my future I'm not going to keep fixing this thing just to tow a few times a year. Kinda sucks though I fixed the suspension with air bags. I fixed the transmission with a cooler and now the brakes/wheel hubs are going.
