What are your tips/tricks to negotiating down the dealership?

Trade ins are money but they're not scrapping by on new to make on used, if that was the case they would be a used dealership. Factory to dealer is one thing I mentioned, maybe not the exact wording, but the same. Also mentioned financing as they get incentives for people to finance, thus why a bag of cash would be worse in most cases than someone willing to setup financing there. Sounds like we are on the same page.

1) Trade ins
2) Hold backs
3) F2D incentives
4) Dealer add ons (rustproofing, warranties, quartz 'sealers' etc)
5) Finance kick backs

If you walk in ready to buy a car, cash is a disadvantage since you are eliminating one of the ways they can make money off of you (2 really since the finance guy many times is the 'heavy' when it comes to dealer add ons like warranties, sealers etc). BUT, it certainly allows the sales guy to not worry about whether or not his finance guy will approve you so its essentially a 'done deal' if you have cash.

Yes, we are on the same page.

I don't like to tell dealers how much I want for my trade. I know of instances where people were offered much more than they expected. No reason to lock yourself in from the start. Know what you want to get, and see what they offer first.

Some great advice in this thread. Don't know if it's been mentioned, but when I hear a dealer mention "invoice price", I tune out. They want you to think that's what they paid to get car; I don't believe it. Focus on MSRP and your target % off.

Did you know that you also negotiate the interest rate of the loans from the dealer?


I always agree to finance with the dealer, giving them that extra bit of revenue...



Then I refinance through my credit union anyways.

Instead of specifying your price, I would suggest that you ask for the dealers' best out-the-door price (including all fees, taxes, title and tags). This way, you should at least get a response -- which might even be better than what you are asking for.

The other thing you can do is look online on a web site such as true car or cars.com in order to see if any one has a vehicle that you are interested in. If the dealer is near you and the price is reasonable, buy it and save the hassle. Remember that time is money and that it may be advantageous to spend a few hundred more to buy a vehicle locally rather than traveling out of the area.

I'd leave out the trade, complicates the issue. Settle on sale price then move onto trade.

Add:

-date you're able to purchase by (end of June would be perfect)
-cash or finance

Negotiate the price of the vehicle not your payments! I bought a used Tahoe listed at 18771 I think paid 16,6 plus ttl. Not a new vehicle but I'm sure the same principle applies. Like others have said don't be afraid to walk out.

I think I am going to pull the trigger on a 2017 Denali.

I wanted to see what sort of tips/tricks each of you used to negotiate down the price of your vehicles. Did you call up Laura GMC and use them as leverage against a local dealership? Print out a Truecar certificate? What is your secret recipe for getting the price you want on the vehicle you want?

You've got to state what you will pay and when they say no, get up and walk out. TRUST ME they will chase you.
On deal I did was literally with one foot outside the door and one foot inside the door.
My last deal last month I stated my price which was 10K less than sticker and they did not agree, so I walked out telling my wife to "walk slow" because they will chase us. As we walked to our vehicle, still no salesman. I still kept walking, still no salesman. Then at the very last second ( They must have been watching from inside) the salesman came running out and said OK, "my boss" agreed to your price.
Also remember this, when they leave you alone the office is bugged and they are listening to what you ware talking about. Since I knew this I stated talking a little louder to my wife and said " We should leave the last dealership was going to meet our price why are we here" etc etc etc.
Do not let them check your credit you tell them what your credit score is and they can check it once they meet your price.
Now that you have them hooked they will pile on at the finance desk. I told the finance guy, anything you ask me to buy I will say no to - so save yourself and me some time and let's just move on. Then I said "How long will it take them to put a full tank of gas in my new vehicle?" plus " I would sure like one of those GMC hats I saw in parts, can you get me one for free" He said yes to both.
The LONGEST it took a salesman to chase me was I got to my vehicle and drove away, and he called my cell phone and told me to come back he would meet my price. Then I told him I'll turn around if you also now sell me your deluxe warranty package AT YOUR COST. He agreed. Warranties are great selling tools when you sell your vehicle. On that vehicle I paid 32K with tax ,with warranty, drove it for two years and sold it for $29,900.00 - so it cost me a little over 2K to drive that vehicle.
