I am changing out all the fluids on my 04 2500 Suburban since she just hit 200k. Is Dot 3 still the recommended brake fluid or is there something else you guys would reccomend?

As far as i know 3 is for cars/trucks, 4 is a little more heavy dutyish and 5 shouldnt be mixed with either because its silcone based and i personally use in my bikes.

Thank you for the replies. The cap and the owner's manual state Dot 3; however, it also calls for Dex 3 which Dex 6 has replaced. I was just checking to see if Dot 4 or Dot 5 was the new norm.

You can use DOT 4 in a DOT 3 system but can not introduce DOT 3 in a DOT 4 system. DOT 4 has a higher boiling point than DOT 3.

Like Galante stated DOT 5 is silicon based and for use with motorcycles.

I used Valvoline Synthetic DOT3/4 when I flushed my system out last year. No complaints.
