My transfer case housing has oil splattered all over it and the output seal appears to be leaking. There is never any oil on the ground though where I park it so it must be small. I looked up this procedure and it looks pretty simple. Just remove the bolts at the rear end, drop the drive line, pull out the shaft, and pop the seal out and replace it. Is that about it? I saw some videos where they put Lock tite on it. Is that necessary? Any other tips let me know. This is for a 2000 Tahoe. Thank you.

insted of Lock tite you can use a little amount of Reinzosil from Victor Reinz this stuff is awsome perfect even for gaskets that stay in contact with gasoline !!

I am pretty sure this is a dumb question, but I have to ask it. Do you need to drain the fluid before replacing this seal? I just assumed the fluid would be behind that seal, but in the videos I watched, they did not mention draining it first. Also, what do you have to torque the bolts to when you reattach the drive shaft to the rear end?

I am going to finally get around to fixing this later this week. Am I correct in needing to drain it first? Also, do I need to lube that shaft with anything before i put it back together?

I would drain it and replace the fluid if it hasnt been done anyway. There will be some leakage when you pull driveshaft yoke out. Id take a green scratch pad or emery cloth around the shaft real good to clean it up. Lube it lightly with transfer case fluid. If your u joints arent factory and are held in by clips be sure to electric or duct tape bearing caps to the ujoints. Wrap it all the way around so the caps dont come off or you will end up with needle bearings everywhere.
