It was unusually warm here in upstate NY the other day, so I figured I would try out my A/C to make sure it still worked. Turned the button on, set it to MAX, no cold air. Popped the hood, the compressor clutch is not engaging. Last I knew (about 5 months ago) it was working perfectly and the pressure on the low side was fine. So, where do I start first? I've heard people say just add freon until the compressor kicks on, and heard others say it's a very bad idea or won't do anything. Any input would help a lot. I'd love to get it fixed before summer hits.

There is a leak in the system and it shuts off the compressor to keep the system safe. Use a spray bottle of water lightly on the hose connections to see if it bubbles. You may have one or both leaking which requires replacing the Shrader valves, same as valve stems in tires only larger. Then you charge the system, JMHO and good luck.

Had the same issue with mine. Jump the low pressure switch with a wire to force the clutch to engage. This will tell you if it is functioning or not. As Red Tahoe LS said, if the freon gets too low, the clutch WILL NOT engage to keep from damaging the system. Once that is clear, I would add freon with UV dye to find where the leak is coming from. Turns out, my schrader valves were leaking AND my compressor is shot. If you don't want to deal with all of that, take it to AC shop. Some places do it for under $100. Shop around.
