Ever since working at pep boys some years back I have seen to purchase Purolator Pure Ones and if its not too much of a difference or on sale get the Boss now.

I went through an article a while back about oil filters brand vs brand. I cant recall the mag i found it in but it was a good read with some legitimate numbers and testing done. Unless its some crap no name brand filter they are pretty much all the same. I do remember i think fram was 99.98~ or something like that and a k&n filter was a little better but such a small amount i just stopped buying the more expensive filters. The only reason i buy the Purolator one filter is the grip paint they put on them. That and advance around here atleast stopped selling fram filters.

Look around the web and you'll find articles where they've cut open filters to check the internals and filter media. For my money I go with...

1) Mobil 1
2) Purolator Boss
3) Purolator One
4) Wix

The Purolator One was my default before they came out with the Boss. Boss is just a step finer in media as far as I know and the Mobil 1 was just about as fine as you could get a year or so ago.

I noticed that when I use Purolater One I have less lifter clatter in a cold start (midwest winters). I drive a good amount of highway and the oil seems fairly clean after 2,500 miles as well.

However, I haven't tried Mobil 1, K&N or Boss. I have used AC Delco and it seemed OK. In one of the kids vehicles - 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic with the inline 6 I used Wix because it seemed to be better at holding oil pressure on start.

working at a parts store and if you actually care about the parts you sell then reading up on them is a think you should do. At least I did. It felt better pushing stuff to sell that I actually knew about. I read same kinds of articles basically for all brands. Not much of a difference as long as you stay in the higher grade of w/e manufacture you like. I have always stayed away from Fram mainly due to a couple race cars from my dads friends were using their high dollar filters at the time (2005ish) and the filters inside the canister started breaking apart and oil pressure lost and things went bad. These two cars happened within the same summer. These cars were street dragsters and did oil changes after each weekend sometimes after a few races depending on that day. Maybe they got some bad apples but ever since then I have never and will never buy Fram.

Probably either bad apples or some odd ball occurance. Matters not prices aren't really any different and for regular dd n/a engine any notable brand filter would be fine. Used only fram for a while never had a problem but i used to use bosch spark plugs for a long time aswell. Had the bottom of one of those come off a while back been using ngk since.

Being I just bought my 09 Tahoe, I used AC Delco on my first oil change. Not knowing what oil was already in there, I used Castrol High Mileage Synthetic blend oil. Next change I will go with full synthetic.
