Wheel alignment after front strut install?

I have a 2008 Tahoe LTZ with autoride that needs the left front strut replaced. I called the dealership parts department to price a shock replacement and the guy tells me that I will need a front wheel alignment after it's installed. That didn't sound right but the guy says the front suspension on newer vehicles need that done after front struts are replaced. Reading through the threads here I don't see any mention of wheel alignment. I understand he was the parts guy but I wanted to see if any of you that replaced the front struts had to have a wheel alignment afterwards.

Unless it changes your ride height dramatically or you need an alignment now, I wouldn't think you need am alignment after a new strut install.

I actually lowered my front end 1-1/4" via struts and it improved my factory alignment (tires are wearing better anyway!).

I think your parts guy has these struts confused with MacPherson struts...

Pretty darn sure that an alignment is NOT called for after simply replacing front struts or shocks.

Most shops require an alignment when replacing major suspension components, especially when ball joints and tie rods are separated.

Shocks aren't as big of a deal since they can be replaced with the suspension in tact and don't affect ride height. Struts require more components to he R&R'd, and directly affect ride height.

You might be able to find a shop that will throw a strut in and let you be on your merry way. But most shops won't because most people will then turn around and blame them if their tires wear uneven or of the vehicle doesn't track right after the work is done, whether the alignment was affected or not during the service.

If you need one strut. Why not do both and you won't have to worry about the other one going in two months down the road. I would at least check the alignment. Saves tires and the other front end components.

Agree. $70 alignment can save you from having to buy two $200 tires later. If a shock has gone bad, it certainly can affect alignment.
