Going to replace my starter and the cables as its starting to show signs they are getting weak. I haven't looked at the starter on the truck yet and haven't done a starter on one of these yet i have a question. Shopping around to find a good deal im seeing 2 variants available for the same engine. The one is called a direct drive and the other is listed as a magnet something or other. They both appear as i could use either one and as the price also seems to vary about 20-30 bucks im curious if it matters which one i get. Or if there is some kind of benefit to buying one or the other. Im generally used to only seeing one type of starter available for a specific vehicle only varying by brand hence my question if it matters which one i get.

I just did this on my 99 Denali. I needed the gear reduction unit as I bought the other one and it was a little too big and did not fit.

The job is very simple with only two bolts holding it in place. The two wires for the electrical connections were a pain as they were badly corroded. I had to cut the power wire and splice in a new connector. Otherwise it was a simple job.

Done plenty of starter and ive come to the point where i have new ends or a new cable ready from the start. Ive never owned anything that a basic cheap starter didnt fit the bill so honestly besides high end starters i didnt know there was another option.
FYI a new ACDELCO starter is $100 on Rockauto.com
As far as this goes
I can get a driveworks brand from local advance store for 95 or 75 for valuecraft from the local autozone. I dont buy acDelco parts unles its the only thing they have available. Not that i really think there is anything wrong with acDelco parts they are just overpriced. Also a main component i will always buy my parts local to cut down on any chance of extended downtime.

Personally I'd stay away from the driveworks brand. I replaced the starter in my express work van with one and I had nothing but problems! Exchanged it a week later with another brand and it's been problem free. Junk imo!

Within the first two days of putting it in I had to crawl on the ground and bang it, not easy to do parked close to the curb in a pouring rain!

I second that try doing it in the rain with a 91 rs camaro. Alot less ground clearance lol. You definitely take more chance buying cheaper parts get what you paid for as it goes. I did get a faulty driveworks alternator once but i got a replacement with no arguement plus an extra 20 off my next order. Some time lost out of my day to replace it twice but it doesn't bother me as much as it does others.
