Transfer Case Issue - 99 Yukon with NP246 - Lots of Pics

Ok, the issue was the front diff. Problem is the washer pictured below. It's kept in place by the end of the axle, which has a *** on the end. The axle *** fits in the hole in the middle of the washer. If you pull the axle out, like I did a few months ago when I replaced the axle seals, and...

Transfer Case Issue - 99 Yukon with NP246 - Lots of Pics

New speed sensors x 3 installed. 4WD still not working. The "Service 4WD" light isn't coming on anymore. I pulled the actuator off the front axle and tested it. It seems to work just fine. It's not the thermal actuator and it engages immediately. Is there any way to determine if it's...

Transfer Case Issue - 99 Yukon with NP246 - Lots of Pics

Started off with a pretty clean shift motor. Didn't look like it was too beat up, but obviously had been apart before. Start off by undoing the three torx screws on the plastic motor housing. Then unscrew the four torx screws on the other side. Two are the security style torx screw heads...

    Where to start

I've heard good things about the nickel-plated slip yoke, but don't have any experience with it. I'd try that before going with another rear end rebuild. Scott

Transfer Case Issue - 99 Yukon with NP246 - Lots of Pics

Yes, I had both connectors plugged in on the shifter assembly. I'll finish with cleaning and reassembly of the shift motor today. Plan to re-install and test it this afternoon. If it doesn't work, I'll shift into 2WD and wait for my reman shifter motor assembly unit to show up. It's...

    Where to start

Pull driveshaft, grease inside of transmission yoke, reinstall. Check for clunk. Fairly common issue; I greased mine a while back and the clunk went away. Came back recently, but that was after maybe a year of no clunk. Could be pinion slop, too, but that shouldn't be the case with a rebuilt...

Transfer Case Issue - 99 Yukon with NP246 - Lots of Pics

[/COLOR] May be one shop that has a scanner that will work. I'll check this weekend. Went home for lunch (I live 1 mile from work), put the Yukon up on ramps, yanked front driveshaft, unhooked the wires, and undid three bolts to get the shift motor out. Took maybe 10 minutes. Took the...

Transfer Case Issue - 99 Yukon with NP246 - Lots of Pics

I'm about 7,000 miles from the nearest dealer who would have one of these... Will see if I can find one with a Google search. If it's not ridiculously expensive, I may order one. In the meantime, anything else I can check? Also, how can I get the transfer case in 2 HI and keep it there...

    99 tahoe broke down...help!

No issue running synthetic in an engine that's never had it. It's expensive, but if you're running 5k-6k between changes, I would do it. On a gasser, I usually run dino oil to 3k and then change. Synthetic I went to 5k. That's a conservative interval, but I try to take good care of my stuff...

Just checked. No fuses blown. Scott

    Front Axle End Seals

Replacing the seals isn't terribly difficult. If you have average skills you should be fine. Will just take some time. On the pinion, here's another method - use a torque wrench (probably a smaller inch/pounds one) and put in on the pinion nut. Note how much torque it takes to turn it with...

Transfer Case Issue - 99 Yukon with NP246 - Lots of Pics

Fellas - Perpetrator is a 99 Yukon, 210k miles, very original 2-owner vehicle, 5.7, 4L60E, NP246. Here she is in my "garage" (I'm active duty Army stationed in Seoul, South Korea). Transfer case had been leaking because of the common pump rub - wore a pinhole in the back. It also quit...
