Got to looking at the air silencer between the MAF and the intake manifold today. Realized it looked like an alien system and realized it had to be robbing HP and MPG.

SEE PHOTOS!

Without paying for the the K&N system, upwards of $300, I wanted some less restricted, less EPA governed air flow. The outlet of the MAF measures 4 5/8". The intake measures about 3". You do the math, bust as long as the intake tubes all measure 3+", all should be fine.

I removed my factory piece between the airbox and the intake. See below.
What a nightmare.

The angle coming out of the intake was hard to reproduce, so I ended up using 4" dryer vent. I connected it to a pieces of PVC and some couplers to make the system work. I had a concern that the hose would not be rigid enough and would collapse under heavy throttle. That is why I kept the use to a minimum. It is pulled tight enough in both places that is isn't affected under full throttle.

Hose, PVC, clamps, and tape cost about $16. I have $40 in the K&N filter after rebate.

What remains is a decent cold air system. I have noticeable increase in throttle a response and the air intake sounds much better without roaring. Happy Happy Happy!

Since I doubt the flex hose will paint well, I will probably wrap them, or the entire assembly, with black duct tape. Any other suggestions to make it black?

It's under the hood where no one will see it unless he shows them. He was able to make a cold air system for not even a fraction of what one cost. Good job man

Just realized thats a dryer tube

Could have just gotten a Airaid MIT tube.

Would look a million times better.

I understand you trying to be cost effective...... but that does look horrible.

As above said ^^^^

If the dryer tube gets sucked in....... you will be out way more than you saved.

Wow, i understand a budget, but save up and buy the right tube. Intake does not do that much that it needs to be home made like that. They aren't $300. Not sure where you looked. $100 bucks all day brand new here w/ filter. Or used for $50 or so.

just my .02. Heck tell me your budget and i'll find you one.

Thanks for everyone's "concern." Haha. This was never intended to be a long-term mod. I understand it looks like crap, but it will survive a couple tanks of gas. Long enough to see if removing the oversize silencer and adding the aftermarket filter adds any noticeable HP, throttle response, or MPG.

I haven't been able to find any concrete reviews of aftermarket intakes on here. This who have applied the suggested intakes, any quantifiable improvements?

Great Castle GIF.

The other thing is that dryer tube and the thin walls of it, makes you wonder if the cold air wouldnt reheat in the dryer tube......
