I cancelled my earlier thread because it wasn't defined to what I was asking. I ended up with threads from 2000-2002 Yukon XL which are a different post all together because they have speakers in the rear. In 2003 through 2006 the speaker grill in the back is empty with no speaker or box in order to work with. Ill Start over does anyone who owns a 2004-2006 Yukon XL Denali, have any of you installed a speaker in the way back on the Driver side where it looks like it as a speaker Grill. Has anyone took it upon themselves to build and install a subwoofer in the back behind the Mock Speaker Grill. I'm looking for anyone with knowledge on the size of box that I need to build to install a 8",10", or 12" subwoofer in its place. I am wiling to PayPal anyone who can build a box for the empty space which is where the Jack and tire iron are located over the wheel well and back further there is an open space to install a sub woofer and I really want to get one installed but everyone who I talk too have an 8" sub already installed from the factory because they are older models and they have them stock. I replaced my front 8" Sub that is located under the dash in the front to a Rockford 8" Audiophile and it sounds good with the Bose amplifier. But in the back the base is not heard like in front. I don't want to jeopardize my rear space with a big Box and 2 12" subwoofers pounding it out. I would like a little rumble in the back while watching movies. I have an Alpine IVA-D310 mounted where the stock six CD disc changer was and it has a 7" motorized pull out screen and I use that as my main Stereo for my System. I have a IPod Adapter installed and also a M300 Navigation unit installed to the D310. I Installed an Alpine Flip up Monitor where the regular Navigation radio was factory installed. The Alpine is installed to my DVD player from my Alpine D-310 so I can watch movies where the old radio was and also where the 6 CD changer was. Plus I installed a 21" flip down screen in the back where we can watch movies on all three monitors. This was a ***** mounting because I had to make the brackets around the flip down so the Moon Roof opens and slides back with no rubbing or hitting anything. They said I would have a problem with Sag because of the Big Screen and right away I did. I looked where the weak points were and I epoxied the weak points and braced the 21" flip down in all points where I used epoxy. After two days I removed the braces and it stayed just like it would from the factory. Driving on the highway there is no unwanted bounce which I was worried about. The epoxy will hold thru out the life of the vehicle. The 21 inch flip up is a 1080P screen and I have a portable Blu-ray that I plug into my alpine d-310 and the visual is more than I expected. I just want a little boost in the back with this subwoofer so its like the kids are watching a movie from the theater's. I don't know if I should work on the auto ride compressor or the Subwoofer. I don't pull anything big, ever since I hurt my back and my wife in the hospital I cant ride Motorcycle or snowmobile anymore so that are parked and ready for sale. The suspension hasn't caused ant problems at all except for the check auto system. Please help me with an enclosure if you can. Take Care and I will try to help you all of you if have any questions that I know the answer too I will help you out as soon as I read it. Thank you guys and Take Care!!

It took me 3 days to read this post.

I'd start reading for a while, and then loose my place about a third of the way through. By the time I got halfway through, I was completely lost. Give up and try again later, I thought. By the third day's attempt, I think I read most of it.

The issue isn't the length of the post. It's the fact that one key is missing.
It's called the "Return" key. One some keyboards it's called the "Enter" key.
Give it a shot. About every 4 sentences or so, look for that key, and hit it two times.

A wonderful thing will then happen....

Paragraphs!

Your earlier thread was defined well enough, and you were getting great constructive help from Vette66 on that thread. It isn't clear why you felt the need to cancel that thread, and that direction of help. And then you dismiss the 2000-2002 threads as being a "different post altogether", when in fact those threads contain the most relevant information to help you reach your goal.

Why are the 2000-2002 models relevant?

Because the 2000-2002 have an enclosure (actually two types) that precisely fits in the space you are trying to stuff a sub into. It's already done. Even if you want something bigger, the '01-'02 models provide a 3 dimensional pattern as to what shape enclosure fits all clearances between the sheet metal shell and the plastic interior trim. The '03-'06 models don't have that enclosure, so what can be learned from nothing? You might reconsider giving the 2000-2002 threads a re-read as you plan your project.

Yes. I have a 2005 Yukon XL with the fake speaker grill in the back that had no speaker, just like your 2004. Yes, I have taken it upon myself to install a subwoofer in the back behind the mock speaker grill. Yes, I have knowledge of the size of box needed to build and install an 8" subwoofer in it's place. And yes, I obtained that knowledge from the 2000-2002 models.

(third paragraph) ;)

I've seen only one installation photo essay online where someone glassed a massive and messy glob of fiberglass directly to the sheetmetal over the wheel hump in order to make an enclosure that would fit a driver larger than 8". I think he used a 10". He chiseled off the jack and tire iron mounting bosses from the wheel well. I didn't save the link because I preferred the clean, factory fit of the 01-02 OEM enclosure that was already made without my making a mess. But I found the link initially through a google image search. Give that a shot, if you want something completely custom.

The front factory Bose sub under the dash at the center console is 6.5."

But in the back the base is not heard like in front.

Agreed.

I don't want to jeopardize my rear space with a big Box and 2 12" subwoofers pounding it out.

Totally agreed. That's why just like you, I wanted to use the space behind the mock speaker grill, where the Sub enclosure used to be mounted, completely out of the way, back in 01-02. The simplest way to find out what size enclosure fits in that space, and more importantly, what angles and contours and cut offs the enclosure has to have in order fit into the nooks, crannies, and crevices of the existing space... is to look at an 01-02 enclosure. It isn't square. It isn't rectangular. It is L shaped, with angles, slopes, and mounting tabs to keep it from rattling around.

The most surprising dimension discovered when I received the box was how shallow it was in the area where the driver aligns with the mock speaker grill. The mounting depth space is only 3.5". The enclosure is much deeper elsewhere, especially in the cavity of space that is reachable through the removable access tray to the jack, but that is not where the driver is centered. The driver is centered directly opposite of the fuel filling bay, which encroaches into the space you are imagining is there, until you pull the plastic trim panel and see for yourself (highly recommended).

Well, I only made it halfway through your post again... but will stop here.

I have and several other members have added subwoofers in the cargo area. You can get an OEM subwoofer box from a 2000-2002 Suburban or Yukon XL (not the Denali model). You can then take the crappy oem speaker out of that and put a good quality 8" subwoofer in it. Get an amp to power that.

If that is not enough bass for you, then you would have to have someone custom build you an enclosure back in there for you. I think you would be pleasantly surprised how the stock enclosure with a new speaker/amp sounds. It really does deliver. I just took a dremel tool and cut the plastic out of all those little holes to make the speaker grille like the pre-2003 models. Took a while but worked just fine and looks OEM.

I would get the suspension fixed first. If you're the one driving the vehicle, you can hear the bass just fine since you are up front and not riding around in the back, so who cares? Get the autoride working, then save up for a subwoofer.

Scribble, the thread you posted is of a Tahoe / Yukon .

The OP has a Suburban / Yukon XL.

Way different shaped box.

If the OP had a Tahoe / Yukon, then he could just get the MTX Thunderform box and be able to throw a 10" shallow mount in it and be done. But MTX doesn't make a version for the Suburban or Yukon XL. Only the Tahoe / Yukon.

This is what it the 2001-2006 Tahoe MTX Thunderform looks like:

Thank you so much for pointing out my flaws sometimes I questions myself if im writing the correct words and do they make sense then I start all over. I appreciate your email and do You have the dimensions and the best type of speaker and place to mount it would you suggest??

I wasn't trying to "point out your flaws" (yikes, that made me cringe with shame when you put it that way).

I was only trying to tease you in a humorous way, so that you'll make your post easier to read... not easier to understand.

You were using the correct words, and you were very well understood.

The answers to your questions about the easiest to fit enclosure dimensions, as well as the best type of speaker to mount into that enclosure, are all found in the 2000-2002 thread, which you earlier suggested didn't apply to your 2004.

That was the other thing I was trying to tell you in my post... the 2000-2002 thread DOES apply to you, because the easiest to fit, easiest to find, easiest to install rear sub enclosure for your 2004 Suburban or Yukon XL just happens to be a parted out enclosure from the rear of the 2000-2002.

The smaller Tahoes and Yukons have other options, like the MTX Thunderform. And if you have rear split cargo doors (not sure if these were discontinued in 2003 or 2004), then there is another pre-manufactured option for the rear made by Q Forms. But if you have a regular single piece liftgate with a glass hatch in a long wheelbase Suburban, then the only pre-made box available is the legacy box from 2000-2002.

I know that you can retrofit 00-02 enclosure into a 2004, because I've done to a 2005.
