Starting to look at 2500 Series 4X4 Diesel

Converting to the duramax is not bad. I did it and love it. 2003 and up can use the 2007 LBZ Dmax because the wiring works. 2000 to 2002 has to use the first gen LB7 Dmax. If you want a pulling full size SUV this is a reasonable route to take.
First off the gasser 3/4 tons are going relatively cheap because of age and mileage. The wreaked donor truck for Dmax, Allison, rearend and other parts will probably cost you more. Swapping it in has become common for the 800 platform so its not priced bad either and all the bugs have been worked out. Mine is 2 years old now with no problems. Heres my 2005 4x4 hooked up to my 35' Travel Trailer.
