How to fix Crusie control not working when installing LED's tail lights.

So as seen in the General Section I installed LED taillights and all was good until I tried to use my cruise control at night. In fact today it did not work at all with the lights on or off. So here is the fix.

This happens with a lot of cheap tail lights there is not resistance figured in when they build them so most systems see a burnt out light or like this something does not work that has to deal with the brake or running lights.

Soooo the fix is load resisters, got a pair at AutoZone for $12.99. You can get these at electronic shops also you need 10 ohm 25 watt load resisters. My favorite electronic shop was out, so next more expensive was AutoZone.


These will be installed between the ground which is the Black wire and the Blue wire which is the positive switched by the brake pedal. Both sides need to be done and both sides they are the outside wires. Make sure you are dealing with the connector that has the 3 wires not the 2 wires. 3 wires is the brake light connection.



These get hot like a 25 watt light bulb so you want to make sure the resister is 1" away from other wires. It may not melt them but it may char them from heat over time causing them to break.

Here they are connected with the splicer connections.


I will redo these later and use high temp silicone and extend the wires so I can mount them to the metal pocket the light sits in. I did this as a test as I was unsure if this was going to be the fix.

So now my cruise control works and the LED light still work and are bright as they where before.

Was this an issue for everyone with these tail lights? I heard other people only had problems if they had a barn door model

Mine is a lift Gate and YukonXL04 has a barn door both did the same thing. So I don't think its rear door specific.

I can also say with certainty now the this will apply to all the 2000-2006 Chevy/GMC Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban. I just installed these in my sisters' 05 Tahoe and same deal. Had to install the load resisters or the cruise control would not work if the headlights where on.

I installed LED tail lights in my 04 tahoe recently and lost CC. I installed 2 50w 6ohm resistors on each side. Connecting to the black and the blue wire. My cruise control still does not work. I swapped back to the original tails and the cruise control started working again. Is there something I am missing?? Any help would be great

The instructions said quote: "You can get these at electronic shops also you need 10 ohm 25 watt load resisters". Not 6 ohm 50 watt. It's the resistance that matters most. The wattage is the amount of power they will handle. So 50 watt is OK but 6 ohms isn't enough resistance, you need 10 ohms..

I found some 10ohm and installed according to the first post and still do not have cruise control. Any other ideas on what could be going on?

Are your brake lights working? If they are and you have the resistors connected between the ground (black) and positive brake light wire (blue) then I don't know what it could be but I have heard of people having problems with some of the cheap China-made Ebay LED taillights. Also make sure the wires are actually making a good connection to the resistors.

Brake lights work. Everything seems to be making a good connection at the resistors. The tail lights are Spec D Tuning that I got off Amazon. I guess I could try and make the connections another way than the provided clips. If I buy a new set that has the built in resistors for the hyper flash will that also work for the cruise control.

Not sure about the built-in resistors but I'd try soldering and taping the connections. But first, you should be able to tell if the resistors are working if you put something to hold the brake pedal down for a couple minutes and then check to see if they're both hot. They should get real hot, almost to the point of burning your hands when you touch them. That's why they need to be mounted away from the wiring. If one or both aren't hot, they're not connected right.

Old post but with my 02 Yukon cruise works and kicks out when I press on brake with lights out front running lights on but if I turn lights on manually cruise turns off, I have resistors installed as described. Maybe I need to put resistor installed on driving taillight; I know it's same bulb (bulb socket plugs into led light assembly) but putting resistor on brake wire not working.

The marker light circuit has nothing to do with cruise. It’s probably the led bulb itself. Try a different set, or is the entire tail light assembly led?

It is complete led tail light you plug sockets into light except for backup bulb. Also put led flasher in but never had hyper flash just put in to cover that end.

Do you have the stock lights to swap back in to see if it’s the tail lights themselves? If it’s the lights, I’d return them and buy another brand. I’m running Spyder and have had no issues.

Is it possible that bad switch contacts or something inside the multifunction lever shorting out?

No, I don't think so because I can control cruise working or not by manually turning running lights on or off. with cruise on and lights off I can use turn signals then hit brake and turn cruise off but the minute you turn lights on manually cruise won't work at all. Thanks for thought.
