I have some really quiet FlowPro 20 true duals... changing them out for Magnaflows.

I've been reading and researching alot over the last few days. Spent about 2 hours in 3 shops talking shit with the owners and a few hours listeing to clips on youtube. What I've learned is that exhaust is so much a personal thing of preference man. If you want to go with a raspy or rumbly sound no matter how hard you hit the gas, go with Flowmasters. The downside of Flowmasters is their chambered design allows for two things: less flow due to their chamber design, and possible droning due to their spot welded design.

If you want something less quiet with more flow, go for some Magnaflow straight through designed mufflers. They are loud when you get on em though....and I think the larger the size of the canister, the quieter the sound.

Just thought I'd chime in my .02

I've heard magna has drone?
Only reason this concerns me is I have had LOUD!! My previous was a souped up vette with heads/cam/headers and straight through exhaust with no cats, I want a nice soft rumble primarily for gas savings though ;) Corsa looks to be the answer although it's the most pricey one out. I just purchased this vehicle so my search is far from over.

I have the Magnaflow. It has a little rumble to it but sometimes you can barley tell its there. When in park and pressing on the gas you hear a rumble but the engine rev is louder. I drove it from VA to NJ and I was happy with the rumble while on the hwy. Seems like its performs louder on non stop hwy then stop and go traffic around town.

Curious on those that have the Magnaflow. How is the drone? What RPM's can you hear it the most at? As stated before, My vette was so loud, It was hard having a convo with the passenger, let alone a cell phone. Plus I have a baby now and woudln't want to interupt his sleep with my exhaust.
I know the SLP Touring would be the way to go as far as the sound and looks for that matter, but I can't bring myself to pay $900 for my hoe's exhaust when my primary purpose is MPG savings.

Why would you want an OEM muffler off an Escalade? I am pretty sure they are the same as the Tahoes. The noise you are hearing is from the larger engine.

RE: the muffler off of an Escalade. I had a 07 EXT (with the 6.2L monster) and it sounded pretty sic at idle. Friends always asked if I had an aftermarket system put in. When you hit the gas it doesn't get too loud, perfect for my middle aged ears :) My new 09 Tahoe (with 6.0L little monster) is too damn soft. Looking to add a Borla or Corsa system. The Lade didn't need it IMHO.

I have duel 50 Series suv flowmasters on my silverado (just got them today sounds sick) Does drone on the freeway. But at 45-55 the rpm is so low the radio at normal volume overrides the noise. But when you stand on it look out. I will say tho it feels like I lost some power with this setup. But I like the noise when revving.

Flowmaster mufflers are baffled and not a straight through design like Magnaflow and Borla. They are more restrictive than a straight through, that maybe the reason you feel like you lost power.

Flowmaster sucks, Go with Magnaflow, Borla, Volant or Corsa. Flowmaster is a baffled muffler which will offer NO performance gains.

like im sure we have all heard before opinions change for each and every person. For me personally the magnaflow is TOO quiet even with the resonator taken off. I have heard that volant has the same sound. Was told that corsa is an even quieter system. The only one i would be truly interested in is the Borla but i cannot find just a straight muffler for our car.

Borla does make a muffler that will work for our Tahoes and Yuks. I used to have one but switched it out for the 22" Magnaflow because I wanted to be a bit quieter. So I think that might be the one you are looking for. I canot remember the model number, however it needs to be center/offset in a 19" case. Good luck bro

http://www.borla.com/cart/cart.aspx?cmd=add&prod_id=1477&qty=1

I am pretty sure that is the one I had. Sounds like it would be a good one for what you are looking for. A little more sound than the Magnaflow, but the shop installing it will have a little more work to do to get it on there.

IncisionInd
12-01-2009, 05:41 PM
whats the work that would go into it cause now i just saw your post about the borla muffler and the slp tips and that is looking like a pretty good option now.

Conor
12-01-2009, 06:11 PM
Well, the Borla muffler is about 5" shorter than stock and 3" shorter than the Magnaflow. So they just have to add a little more pipe to get everything to match up. Nothing to worry about though as they would have to do that with any muffler swap, just a little more pipe for the Borla. If you are not aware of how they do it, they basically weld the forward end of the muffler to the OEM pipe flange, then they have to add exhaust pipe to the rear of the muffler to get it to reach the rest of the rear exhaust. Pretty simple and cheap as well. Should be about $300-$350 including the muffler. Also, you can get that model Borla on eBay.

By the way, if you are looking for a "good quality" dual tip with a resonator delete, I highly recommend the SLP. I really could not be happier with it. Great looks, quality and sound in my opinion.

but my question is that i do that tip and the muffler so what would they do, cut off and install the muffler, then run a little pipe, then install the SLP??? Also that muffler says that it is a 2.5 in and out. But supposedly our piping is 2.75 so would they need to run an adapter from our actuall pipiing to the muffler or whats up.

Sorry i am a little new to this.

---------- Post added at 03:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:29 PM ----------

BTW right now i have found a spot to get the SLP and the borla together with shipping for slightly less then 300 dollars, so is that pretty good??

Also how much would it cost to install all of this because my 215 dollar flowmaster setup with tips and resonator delete is becoming a 400 dollar borla PRETTY quick.

I have been pricing exhaust systems myself. I decided to go with the Magna cat backs. I was going to get the Corsa's but they couldn't get them to me in time for my BB tune. The Corsa's have come down though. I found them for 850.00 and only$4.95 shipping. This was for the single side cat back tourings for a 09 Denali. If your looking for the corsa's cheap go here.

If you do the tip and muffler install at the same time, then they would just bend a new pipe from the rear of the muffler to the tip, that is the best option. Maybe $50-$75 for install. In my personal opinion, you should stay away from the flowmaster setup.

Muffler- $180
Tip- $140
Install- $80

So $400 is probably pretty close to where you will be at, however, you will have a very nice exhaust system for the rest of the time you own the truck that will actually free up a little power for you. The flowmaster is not nearly as good quality, no performance gains and you would be purchasing an exhaust that you know is not very good. Just my opinion of course.

Post pic if you have any...

I swapped out the stock muffler for the Magnaflow 12589.

Then, I removed the resonator and piping back to the axle and replaced with custom piping that is higher up and unseen from behind.

It dips down to a really subtle Magnaflow 3.5" x 12" tip that peeks out.

---------- Post added at 03:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:21 PM ----------

I like the sound of stock... almost sounds like it has a cam, but I just want it to be a little louder. I hate hearing ONLY engine noise when getting on it, so I am wanting to upgrade. This post has lots of good info, but one thing I notice is that I haven't read too much on the Drone inside the cab, particularly in the middle and rear seats. I had a 97 suburban with a Gibson Catback exhaust, and the drone in low-mid RPM's was pretty annoying in the middle and rear seats.

What's your input on this?

What's the best (quiet) exhaust with the most HP gains?

I have a 2007 Denali XL with the 6.2 and was trying to wake up the sound a little and was thinking of removing the stock muffler and replacing with a straight pipe and leaving the resonator in place. Wonder if that would be too loud??? I have had several S197 Mustangs and have run SLP Loudmouth, Borla, FRPP (Ford Racing Performance Products), Roush, Basani, and Flowmasters on the cars. The SLP is basically a straight pipe with a polished stainless tip and sounded the best but was really loud at WOT, and not too much drone. The FRPP had the worst drone.

Any thoughts??

I had the muffler cut out and put a straight pipe and left the resonator there. Download this and it's a little audio clip of it starting up cold (hence why it takes a little bit to idle)

Thanks

Don't cut the muffler cut off to replace with a staight pipe. You should be cutting off that ugly ass resonator and replacing that with a resonator delete tip like SLP or Volant. Then have the muffler replaced with a non baffled straight through 22 inch Magnaflow muffler or something similar to that. Removing the muffler completely is a little rediculous, not to mention you will fail your emmisions when it comes time for that down the road.
If anythign is cut off, its the resonator you want off, not the muffler

I had the muffler cut out and put a straight pipe and left the resonator there. Download this and it's a little audio clip of it starting up cold (hence why it takes a little bit to idle)

I don't think it had too much drone cruising, but on acceleration it had some noise to it.

That sounds REALLY good! Thanks! Could you get a sound clip while under load?

How much did it cost?

I am running Spin Tech over here, Great sound when you get on it and quiet as stock going down the highway no droning at all. I was gonna go with Magnaflow but the muffler shop guy said not to for a couple of reasons and told me about the Spin Techs and i couldn't be happier.

I'm thinking about getting an exhaust system in the near future and wanted to see what some others were running.

What exhaust are you running?
Post pic if you have any...

2005 Yukon Denali. I put a Magnaflow on it... ITs a bit loud but sounds REALLY good.

I was gonna get Magnaflow since Flowmaster has drone and bad flow, but the muffler shop guy said not too for a couple of reasons then turned me on to the Spin Tech, No droning at all and quiet as stock going down the highway.

I traded/blackmailed the car off to the dealership and got another one so I can't get another sound clip. Only was $75

Also Conor, mufflers have no effect on emissions, that's what the cat is for. The tip that was put on behind the resonator covered it up pretty well so there was no need to cut it off. Could always move the resonator where the muffler is and have a stainless pipe out the back

You're right, I got confused for some reason about the muffler. Your truck does sound pretty good I must say.

Did*

It went bye bye :( The dealer will have a fun time trying to sell it as a family driver given the loudness...

Just ordered the Magnaflow for my 2007 6.2L Denali. After tuning with my DiabloSport Predator, I need something free flowing. I picked up the 16671 and should have it delivered next week. The factory exhaust is loud now but still restrictive.

I've got the Gibson dual extreme (single exit on both sides). One of the quieter systems, but perfect for my tastes! Although, I wish the tips were a bit bigger...

BOSS

i read a thread somewhere that magnaflows tend to drone.

SLP cat back Powerflow system, SLP muffler was to loud so I changed it to a Flowmaster 70, now instead of loud stock it sounds like a powerfull engine muffled much like a big block Chevelle. The system came with trapazoid tips (ugly) I have SLP slashed tip on now.
