What kind of bugs did they work out in the early years of the 5.3 Tahoe? Should I not buy a 00-02? I know that in 03' they coated the cylinder walls or pistons to help avoid that Chevy knock.

I heard to stay away from the 00's, but what about 01' and 02'?

I had an 02. Ran fine, no piston slap, but i had to have the intake gaskets replaced at 75,000.

i've noticed intake gaskets sound very common to go out on the 5.7 and 5.3, same with trannys at that mileage...hahaha.

did you change the intake gasket yourself?

i'd hate to buy a truck with 75,000 miles and have that stuff crap out right away.

i'd be better off buying a higher mileage truck that had that stuff replaced.

I would love to find a tahoe that someone just replaced the tranny and intake gasket. i'd hate to buy a truck with 75,000 miles and have that stuff crap out right away.My tranny was fine. The tranny should be good till at least 160,000 miles ive seen a lot of them go longer than that.

If you take care of these trucks they'll last forever.

These year of Hoe/Kon are also prone to steering problems, and mushy brakes the ones in my '02 were terrible, but overall these trucks dont have many major problems just a few little annoyances.

i thought the mushy brakes was just the pre 2000.

Nope my '02 the brakes sucked. Both my NNBS the brakes are WAY better. In 04 they upgraded the brakes some i believe.

Just a little fyi, I have an 03 tahoe, original owner was my dad. We towed horse trailers, a tractor, an srt-4 on a trailer, mowers, all kinds of crap and I have 104k on it and its fine.

well in 04 they made a bunch of interior changes, all for the better if you ask me, just some dash changes, added the DIC buttons on the stearing wheel and the HVAC is a little different.... then in 05 they added electric cooling fans ILO the belt driven fan, and in 06 the rear glass is a little different but who really cares about the rear glass?

The 03-06 taillights have black surroundings instead of red and they blend in a lot better. But, you're probably gonna get rid of those anyways.
