View Full Version : White on White - Complete Interior Swap
My summer project, gunna hurt the pocket book but man I can't wait. I'm going to completely pull the interior and do all the plastic prep myself to save on some of the $. Edit: I decided to paint it myself so I picked up a large air compressor and some paint guns.
I'm not dreading the interior removal, the install or the prep work....I'm dreading buying the new visors, seatbelts and a couple other parts that you simply cannot avoid replacing if you are going to do what I'm planning. I actually bought this white Tahoe with this interior mod in mind. So with that, I present my biggest project on this hoe!
-Black Molded Full Carpet (Ultra-Plush pile)
-Black Mats (Lloyds plush)
-Black stitched headliner
-Black Leather seats w/Pearl White inserts from Katzkin (gathered, full leather option w/ "BOSS" stitched in front seat leanback)
-Black Perforated vinyl inserts (gathered) on small door panels front/rear
-Pearl White leather steering wheel wrap
-Painting Entire interior semi-matte black
(I'm kinda "branding" the word "BOSS" like it's an after-market custom name :D)
I still haven't figured out this part yet, but I want to cut out the word TAHOE in the door sills. Then maybe install a white piece of plastic film under and over the letters with LED bulb underneath. Any ideas, like where to buy a solid door sill that fits the Gen2 Tahoe that isn't ribbed would be appreciated!

I love white leather...for about a minute till it gets dirty. for some reason I always manage to get filthy throughout the day I wouldnt wanna have to change clothes just to get in the car.
Should look really sick though remeber to take pictures and various stages.

That should look pretty good. Watch out with the white though. Way back in my lowrider days, and that was WAY back, I did one of my interiors with white leather and crush velour. Looked good, but as a daily driver, it was too much maintenence to keep clean.
I'm definitely looking forward to see it all done though!
Ya, as ghey as it sounds, I'll have some seat covers or partial seat covers on to preserve the leather and it's not going to be my daily driver after this year
Weekend comes, I pull the seat covers off! :party33:

Go with suede headliner, seatbelts black or gray?
Go with suede headliner, seatbelts black or gray?
Unfortunately the grey that I've found just doesn't match close enough to the paint for the plastic. So for now I'm going with Black.
Any experiences with painting plastic are much appreciated! I've gotten the instructions from a reputable online shop which are very comprehensive but I like real world experience combined with instruction sets!
Thanks

Man you have some project ahead of ya... should be sick lookin in the end!!
From experience if you get your factory panels prepped properly the paint will stick very very good. Light coats with ample dry time or it will crinkle kind of like solvent pop in a paint job.

Thanks!
I would think heavy solvents would ruin plastic, so my thought was to blast the paint off with a semi-fine sand to keep the plastic countour. I already pulled half of the backpanels from a 05 junk tahoe to practice on.
After my retune with Justin in September, the project begins. It's a little late coming but better late than never.
Still haven't figured out the door sills yet, I really want those flat sills with the word TAHOE cut out and white LED lighting them up. Going to hire JK and he is fabn up the top of my dash before I paint it for Interceptor guages so maybe he can fab that up too at the same time.

Well you can wipe down the plastic with a good degreaser or rubbing alcoholect and you wont have to blast it. My thoughts are that the blasting media will pit the plastics almost instantly. I could be wrong.

Low pressure?? I was thinking the same thing but thought if I could control it a little and what not I might get away with it. The interior was Armor-All'd through and through, even the leather seats. Previous owner was not interior savvy aparently. So that Armor-All has basically baked into all the plastics and I have to get that old paint off. I've already fingernail picked some of it off and it's actually black underneath so it should be easy to monitor while I blast...but hell this is the first time I've done something like this. Guess I'll have to practice first.

Try SEM line of products they have all you need to do it from cleaners, promoters the paint to make it look good! Everyone that I've spoke with that has used there stuff never had any problems and still going strong,no chips, cracks or peels when using there process!
Well I'll be damned. Someone ran off with my interior.
Much of the interior is molded and not painted with the exception of a few pieces, so I think this is going to be easier than I originally thought (fingers crossed).
B
Should be sweet. Friends dad had a Caddy with white GM leather and his black Harley belt rubbed off all over the seat.

Ya I hear ya, you definitely gotta take care of these custom rides. Let me share a sample conversation from last night:
BOSS: So, JK - What do you think I do about the tan colored grab handles, they're molded rubber ya know? You can't exactly paint them and expect them to stay painted.
JK: When people get in your truck, you just tell them "Hey, don't grab the grab handles please."

Oh ya, I feel ya bro...my project's been on hold while I stain some more furniture for my wife to go in the baby room. I think it will be done by Thanksgiving - assuming I can afford all the pieces by then. The plastic will be done long before then though

It was Lowes, and look what they have now... I'm picking one up tomorrow! The little one is good for the corners, & tight spots but your wrist can get rubbery after awhile. This should help with the large flat areas.

Cool man, that extra handle will come in handy. You'd be surprised what that big roller can do in tight spaces as well with the design the way it is, the only problem is where you can apply pressure. That's where the small one would be nice for me.
I know I'm guna eat my words but I'm never dynamat'ing again.....

I'm sure some guys following this are wondering when are we gunna see some results here :) I intend to post up most of the pictures when it's completed and maybe a video but here's some updates of the painting.
So here's some pictures of the paint booth I built in my 3car garage, it really works well aside from the cold. You can't spray unless it's at least 70deg - well it's not recommended anyway. So I run a portable heater beside the ventilation side and it draws in warm air to heat up the room. I have almost the entire interior to paint and going for 2 coats, so this booth is going to save my ass I think.
It's hard to see from the pictures but the booth takes up almost my entire garage, leaving a walkway to my tools and half of one car space for all my plastic pieces and interior parts.
If any guys in Dallas need something painted, now is the time to hit me up! I'm taking it down when this is all done in December. I've been spending some of my weekends test painting plastic from the junk yard, you have no idea how hard it is to match colors and matte finish when doing this! I've gone through 4 colors of paint trying to get it right from the picture I have in my head.
#001,
Framing it out (The walls and the ceiling plastic both go under the wood frame inside the actual booth so it keeps the atomized spray from going anywhere except the exit vents , the rest of the plastic is staple gun'd to the frame pieces in the drying room)
2516
#006
How I installed the frame by myself with pre-rolling the plastic and sticking it on the nails first...there was literally no other way to do this by myself. I would lay the ceiling pieces and a wall piece on the same board and hoist it up myself...serious pain in the ass man

Using a fan and washer/dryer hose from Home Depot wrapped in plastic to ventilate all the paint spray. The dryer hose is rigid so it allows the plastic to be seamed up around it easily. There's 3 vents and a fan vent pulling air out. I use dryer sheets on the vent-in and the vent-out to catch the paint spray molecules and keep them from going in the garage. I learned that trick in the college dorm :)
2525
It's amazing how quickly the room clears when I'm spraying, I didn't think it would honestly. The trick is of course, I have to stay on that side of the room for it to be most effective.
Enjoy

Never heard of it to be honest, I'll keep that in mind. I went with SEM products. They make an elastomeric paint which holds up good to flexing/bending. They have several products to enhance the paint too, a flattener for customizing the look, a reducer to thin it out for spraying and an agent called cross-linker which strengthens the paint against chemicals and abrasions. It will still scratch if you scratch it hard enough of course, but since most OEM plastic is molded, it means the color is in the plastic itself and has more resistance to mild scratching than painted surfaces do.
Here's a test spray I did on junk plastic, I think I got the matte % exactly where I want it now. This is actually listed as a GM black color, although you can clearly see it is NOT a black....adding to the frustration of getting colors correct when you are just going by charts and eyeballing what you want in the result. This one is by no means any perfect piece, I had taped it off, test scratched it throughout 3 coats over a 4 hour period to test different concentrations of cross-linker, repainted it etc. The final coat is a 20% matte finish. I think it's flat enough for my look. :)

Of course, story of my life with a new baby in the house...nothing is put together yet. I'm on a 23 day crunch till Houston and leather doesn't get here till end of next week...FUK!
It's kinda hard to picture the end product...but I hope it comes out cool..it's a serious pain in the ass!
Ordered the Black leather last Friday , double Pearl-white stitch, Pearl white inserts(wife convinced me on the inserts...I still have a hard time imagining them in my truck but they break up the black I guess)

Took a break to eat some lunch...here's a couple cool pictures:
Panels Drying - you really should use a heat gun first to gradually dry them out, it takes me a bout 15 minutes per panel on 800 deg. Move around alot to avoid heating the paint up too much - it will bubble, learned that much already! I also suggest putting in a portable heater too as I did in the drying room, it will help the paint bake into the plastic a little more.

Didn't get as much done today as I thought I would...was busy pulling/scraping the carpet off the front doors...not sure how many have done this but it's no easy task. The carpet is heat molded down on the door panel and it's actually molded into the one piece vinyl that makes up the entire door. So it's tough to sand it off or even use a steel brush wheel..almost impossible to peel it off without using a chizel to rub back and forth along the foam backing as you peel. Plus, to do it right, you have to get it out of the creases because when you lay new carpet, you want to be able to recess it back into those grooves so it looks stock..
So, it took me around 3 hours to do a one panel of carpet..

So I sectioned off junk door to test paint with the same mix of black that I used for the pastic, it looks pretty damn good I think. When I test paint these pieces, I always test scratch them in-between coats to see how they are holding up. Even though I did this during the first few junk plastic pieces to get the cross linker just right, I am a perfectionist to a fault....So I use my fingernails mostly but sometimes I'll take out a flathead screwdriver and rub it down the side of the pieces, mimicking something hard brushing up against the interior of the truck. So far so good on the vinyl door with 2 coats, not a scratch. Same process for baking the paint in, use a heat gun on 800 - moving quickly around the piece so as not to overheat. Dries in 10minutes..
I had sectioned the vinyl off on this door so I could test my prep/paint process on the different sections, but looks like I got it right the first time thank god...I needed some time back to do other sh!t!!

Yessir...actually ended up with black toner which is the black base paint for any color, I added 30% flat in the final mix.
B
It's a little hard to make out in the pictures, but the perf inserts are just slightly more matte than the door itself...the arm rests are going to be that same perf with a french stitch along the entire outside corner.... in white thread of course ..to match the grab handle and the seats.

my grilles got scratched easily especially the back doors you think if I sandblasted them it would help keep the paint on them?

Definitely will help to blast em, you should take em somewhere unless you have a pretty powerful compressor to do it. Blasting requires some good compressor strength.
Paint doesn't stick well to old paint. Plus, if you use almost any adhesion promoter on old paint, the promoter can eat into the old paint depending on what type it is. It will definitely eat SEM Surecoat like it was water to sugar.

Thanks :)

So I was wrong, you 'can' paint the grab handles :)

Here's one of the pics that will become part of the write up, it shows how the top layer of wax buildup, years of Armor-All, chemicals and mold-release chemicals have been removed from the plastic to prepare for paint. You can see I only prepped half the piece in this photo....the plastic itself is dulled out, but it's not sanded even thought it looks that way:

Ya you really can't wrap it in vinyl unless you do sections and stitches, these pieces are heat molded onto the handles with factory vinyl...you have to have some high end equipment that most interior shops dont have.
On the handles there are a couple screws under the plastic pillar piece that hold it on

I've been lurking here for a little while and like what I see! I have a question: Is the SEM paint you're using out of a can or is it mixed? I thought SEM was only rattle can but your post mentioning the matte mix is what has me thinking...
Can't wait to see more!

Can't wait to see more!
Hey bro, the SEM paint is pre-mixed to the color you pick and comes in quarts, pints and gallons. You can order flattner to remove the sheen from the paint, and test the different concentrations that fit the look you want. I personally went with straight black toner, then added 30% flattner to get a semi-matte look.
Once you add your flat, you have to shake the paint - I take mine to HomeDepot for every major spray session, then shake it every time I pour paint out. (Flattner doesn't suspend in the paint so it easily floats) I also added some reducer to be able to spray it, and then added cross linker so the paint holds up against abrasions and chemicals. (AS best it can anyway...so far I'm impressed)
You can contact the guys at vinylpro.com and they are very helpful :)
In order to do this, you're going to need a pretty good size compressor and a paint gun, and I highly recommend a temp paint boot..the atomized spray has even gotten through my setup and I thought it was pretty damn tight!
Don't forget to get filters for when you pour the paint into the gun's cup, it will keep the fine dust and other contaminants out of the gun. The guys at vinylpro recommend HVLP guns (high volume low pressure) but I oversprayed too much with that one. SO even though a non-HVLP can waste more paint by spraying at a higher psi, I had the best success with the non-HVLP gun. (And they're cheaper too)
B
So the doors are coming together now. Speaker grills were prepped after blasting them and I finally painted them. Should have the arm rests done by middle of the week, really looking forward to the final product! Gunna put on the chrome door handles today after I finish the final plastic pieces for the headliner and install that big basterrrd!
3770
I wanted to put this pic up because it shows the vinyl wrap on the door handle inserts. I figured it would get scratched to hell if I painted em, so I sprayed a door and went down to a local interior shop to pick out some matching vinyl. It took me almost 1.5hrs to decide on the vinyl to match the matte black..

Looking good Bobby. You only have a couple weeks before the H-town meet. Think you might have it done? If my schedule wasnt so hectic, I'd drive up there for a weekend and help you put it all back together. But man, I'll be in Corpus for a few days next week, then flying out to Minnesota for four days the week after that, then Cancun for a week. The one weekend I'll actually be in town will be spent at the meet in Houston. And I still have to rebuild the rearend in my truck by the time the htown meet comes around. Anyway, hopefully you'll have it all wrapped up in a couple weeks. Can't wait to check it out bro.

I think mine will be done...I ran out of paint so I had to order some more but looking good

So here are a couple interesting pics of the TOUGHEST pieces to paint, the air vents from the headliner. They are tough because they are so tiny and there are so many angles to hit without globbing up the paint! What I did was tune the settings on my non-HVLP gun to basically allow me to create a airbrush type of spray. I did this by putting a very very tiny amount of pressure on the trigger.
It literally took me no less than 4 hours to prep and paint the 6 air vents...most of the time was painting of course....ugh!

Posting this up too because I think this piece came out really nice, the two textures give it a very cool look:

I love them, post a couple more pictures and my interior will probably be gutted waiting to be painted :D
So my new windshield gets installed tomorrow...had to order a new one because the one I have has a couple chips and tons of teeeny tiny little "nicks"...I guess nicks is the best word to describe it but they look like extremely miniature rock chips in the glass.
The reason I'm replacing the windshield is I'm tinting the whole truck out this week, and hopefully next week I will get to install my windshield tint to protect my dash. I went with a really high end tint, 3M Crystalline. They offer a 70% visible light which is perfect for doing a windshield. The 3M Crystalline is a much more expensive product, considered an exotic tint by most accounts. To give you an idea, the windshield pieces I bought for my truck and my wife's Honda cost me $320.
Here's a link to the tint:

So as it turns out, my interior will not be ready before next week unfortunately...I'm tempted to just put it on hold for now and stop rushing but we'll see. Most of the work is complete but the hold up is the seats. I ordered from Katzkin through a BP of theirs and after going back and forth over the damn logo for almost 5 days now, there's an additional 3-5 day turn around for digitizing the letters for embroidering..very frustrating as I expected to have them by now. Just word to the wise, Katzkin cannot produce any custom embroider designs in their seats for the average consumer in less than 10 days time it seems to me...

Hell yeah!
I can't wait to see it
The new windshield went in on Wednesday, it looks so much clearer than my stock POS. I had them put the stickers towards the bottom of the glass side by side so I could maximize protecting the dash with the tint. In Texas, the inspection and registration windshield stickers can be one on top of the other, or side by side at the bottom of the glass. So since you have to cut a rectangle out of the tint for the stickers, I chose to put them at the bottom instead of the side which would have exposed more dashboard to the sun and uv rays.

If you scotch tape the regy & inspection behind the tint it would stilll be visible as well..depending on the % of tint. Once it needs changing it will not cause damage to the tint.

your truck is gonna look CRAZY. i love the black paint. how much time did you spend prepping each door panel?
Thanks for the props guys
Takes about 30-45mins prep per door panel...definitely a little longer on mine because I had to tape off the inserts and carpet. I didn't want to scuff the new paint with all the poking/prodding that needs to be done with the inserts and carpet install. Basically you have to stuff them both inside the crevices to make it look stock.
Door Panel prep:
1) Clean with dishwasher detergent and an non-scuff pad from grocery store
2) Clean with SEM Soap and a green scuff pad
3) Rinse with distilled water
4) Clean with Vinyl Prep
5) Rinse with distilled water
I used distilled water and rags because my water is pretty heavy out where I live. I wanted the panels as free of contaminants as possible. I used about 12-15 rags for all 4 doors..I have to do laundry every time I did a major step in this interior mod :waytogo:

Those black door panels looks so good, funny how your work looks better than the factory door panel design.
Did you wrap that headliner on your own, is it suede?
I called around dome local dallas shops about a suede headliner and the prices started at $550 and went up to $1700 (JR's Auto Custom can suck mine for that), $550 seems like to much just for the headliner alone, know of any shops?

I'm personally not a fan of the suede...seems very played out now and quite frankly looks messy to me? To each their own of course.
Anyways, my headliner is stitched material that comes in Lexus vehicles. There were two things I didn't do myself here, the headliner and the perforated vinyl pieces...I was focused on painting and just wasn't confident in my headlining skills nor my ability to sew a double white stitch
:insane:
Man these doors get my blood pressure up...they came out really fukn good :rocking:
B
Also finally got around to cuting the carpet and lining it inside the truck..my suggestion is PAY THE EXTRA MONEY FOR MASS BACKING!! It seriously is well worth the extra $99..I had the non-mass backed carpet and it was suck ass to say the least. The mass backing material is great for the oven press they use at ACC to make the (2) molded carpet pieces. They fit 90% perfect, as good as the stock in my opinion..there are alot of dips, crevices and not to mention AC vents to maneavuer over on the truck floor so that is really a big feat to create such a great fitting molded carpet.
I used stockinteriors.com and also got the plush pile option also for added height on the carpet.

i know you custom ordered your paint right? can you tell me what kind of paint you used and the paint code? do they send it to you in a rattle can or do you have to add it to a sprayer?
I have a 30gal vertical compressor and spray guns. What I used was SEM Surecoat black toner and my own mixture of flattner to get the desired effect. It's just the straight black base paint, you buy the paint/flattner/reducer/crosslinker and mix it yourself. Here's the mixture I ended up with after MANY...MANY trials.. :)
SEM Surecoat Black Toner
30% SEM flattner
20% Reducer
12 drops of cross-linker per oz. of black toner above
http://www.onlineconversion.com is your friend here
With regards to the doors, I personally believe they would have come out better if I had only gone 20-25% flattner. They DO look badass, but I've had to clean them up a bit and I don't fully understand why to be honest. There's like a small dusty texture to the top of them that I had to knock down, especially on the front driver side. So if I had to do it again I would probably go 20% or 25% flattner - but that is just a guess on my part. If you are really going to do this, I suggest you call the tech hotline at SEM Paint and ask the question regarding usage of flattner and Surecoat on vinyl. The guys at vinyl-pro can put you in touch with the tech hotline...they're greatly helpful.

This has got to be one of the best mods ever! Boss, the pictures of the door panels iv'e saved and look at them every day and continue to build up the courage (and money) to do this to the caddy. Question: what made you go with sem products and not anything else? Iv'e been searching paints, dyes and stains for vinly, plastic, leather, carpet and of course the they all claim to be ''the way the truth and the light '' as far as changing the colors of these surfaces permenatly. All i can see is that as with any paint job it comes down to prep and that i love how yours is turning out. ps I want permission to use blend ratios.
So I tried like hell to get this interior together but the weather didn't cooperate with me..the SEM Surecoat is a water based paint, so when it's fresh it is very sensitive to water drops. Basically I was painting right up until leaving Dallas for the Houston meet, so the fresh paint and rain scared me and I didn't bother trying to put the plastic in the truck while it was raining..
The seats look kick ass, I'll post up some pics soon when I get back to Dtown

SEM EVERYTHING. They are hands down the best products to work with.
By all means use the ratios...the key is the prep work. Don't skimp on the prep at all. Do everything by the book.
On the ratios, once you get the plastic painted, it will have a texture to it and feels like dust has settled on it. That (I believe anyway) is the flattner. You have to wait 2-3 days for the paint to really cure, then knock down that dusty feel with a micro-fiber towel (no other towels should touch this paint when you're done) very delicately with some Maguire's Quick Detailer as it has a high libricant type of quality to it and won't leave water spots.
Anyways I'll post up a nice how-to soon

Thanks man, I'm a little behind now...small issues, missing screws...not putting the center console back in for now so that's an interesting issue in itself.
Should have it all put back together soon....

hey BOSS where did you go for the leather seats and how much did they cost if you dont mind me asking
Hey man, the seat covers are from Katzkin I got them from www.autointeriorslive.com
They have the best prices on Katzkin leather unless you are a dealer of course. Mine cost me $1200 with stitching, logo, premium upgrade.
If you buy the leather, don't think you are being smart and saving money by only buying the 2row kit if you have a 3row truck. The stitching is different because the small seat has to fold down to access the 3rd row. So if you have a 3row vehicle, you MUST buy the 3row kit...even if you're not going to use the 3row any more like me.

$1,200 is cheap compared to the crappy quality leather the dealer will use and charge $2,000+
Any more complete pics of all the seats and stitching yet?

Yea I hear ya, those guys are really cheap and they have a special right now. I actually got to work directly with the Katzkin seat designers on what I wanted to do so it was really cool having that level of involvement with my crazy ideas. In the end, we went with the standard settings on everything which wasted 3-5 days of everyone's time....most importantly, mine :adminpower:

Thanks guys, still running into minor issues...and to be perfectly honest here I'm pretty sick of jacking around with this interior now! Will finish it up this weekend I think....
So tired of the details...I put the hoe on stands tonight to do something else entirely so i wouldnt mess with the interior

for all of the interior plastic parts what would you recomend the most, paint, leather wrap, or vinyl wrap?

i thought i was the only crazy one to go through all of that work but i guess now theres 2 of us, lol. when my truck gets back from paint, i will upload some pics and let me know what you think.
for all of the interior plastic parts what would you recomend the most, paint, leather wrap, or vinyl wrap?
Thanks!
Depends on your goals..
IF you are going to hardly drive the truck like I intend to do when I'm done, and very few people (if any) will ride with you then you can paint it like I did and it would hold up for a long time. I can scratch my paint easily, especially with something hard like plastic corners against plastic corners...learned that lesson hard.
If you have alot of traffic inside your truck, I would suggest smoothing everything out and doing the color of your choice and laying down a clear coat to protect the paint. You can do all kinds of combos...even flat clear coat :waytogo:
There are some pieces you simply won't be able to wrap, so that's why you see the pillars, arm rests, air bag covers etc that are wrapped because they are easy to do.
Good luck, start a thread and post some pics up

B, what are you using to clean those seats? Did you seal them with anything?
B, what are you using to clean those seats? Did you seal them with anything?
I gently use Lexol cleaner/conditioner about every month. My driver seat is draped in a brand new white towel that I wash every so often so the leather basically looks brand new to this day. The white DOES get dirty if I dont use the towel man, I'm amazed at how quickly it gets dirty. Since I barely let anybody ride in my truck, you can compare the driver to pass seat and it's an eye opener how dirty it can get. That's why I use a white towel until I get some custom covers made with white material on the backside.

Damn dude, and how often do you drive it then?
So are you going to add anymore accents to the interior? What did you do to your center counsel? Anything special? I don't remember if you had it in there when I saw it or not.

This winter, I'm going to build out a 2002 or 2003 denali dash and center console with the same colors and leather pattern, I have extra leather from buying the seat package bc I didn't put in my 3rd row. Except for the aliuminum kick plates with TAHOE in white LED, I'm done with the interior man..already moved on to the outside with a rollpan, esky rack, hd hood...if I can afford it in March I'll build a SC-ready SIICK ass 6.2L

All in all, with about $900 in brand new GM seatbelts - about 6k
Somewhere in the thread I posted this but that $6k is:
carpet
seat covers
paint/materials
seatbelts
vinyl
headliner
new windshield
new high end Wincos tint all around
3m crystalline 70% on the windshield
180sqft Dynamat (inside and underside, engine bay, hood)
I think thats it?

B, love the hoe man looking damn good. The quote is priceless. I swear when I get some wheels on the kon I want us to hook up and have few at bar somewhere. Just so I can check out the interior in person. Don't want my stock ass kon seen with your hoe until i get some wheels:)
I can hear the conversation now. " Look at that nice tahoe, but what is that parked next to it" I don't know but it's stock as hell". That would make a brotha have to get up and leave. Keep up the good work.
