Aw man, I hate to see people paint over the green. That is hands down my favorite color on the 90's Chevy/GMC Full Size.
I love mine in white, but deep down, I wish it was green. My 1998 GMC P/U was green and I freakin loved that truck !!

Whippled2dr
11-23-2009, 12:49 PM
I like the look without the clear better. I agree that the clear makes it too shiny.
clean454
11-23-2009, 02:24 PM
yea i need to find a good clear that will still keep the flat look, now to strip that wheel back down and re-paint! ugh

not bad if you plan on doing something like that in the future for just a short time period try using a single stage paint with flattening agent, you can put as much as u want it to make it fully flat or semi gloss. and you just lay it out wet and it drys flat! i paint cars for a living and shot a old mercury with the stuff didnt look to bad but if you do it make sure to put 3 coats on atleast!
but ya if anyone is looking to do a cheap paint for a nice look just for a short period of time before going the whole route and doing a custom paint. single stage paint works great! just try to stay away from metallic colors or colors with pearl in them, but a solid color like white/black/flat black/ red/ blue look great if you lay them out wet!!

a 60 gallon, and i used different types of sand paper.

01-07-2010, 10:44 PM
Did you block the whole thing or use an orbital sander? I have a 50 gallon and want to paint mine, and wanted to see what you did......great results by the way
clean454
01-07-2010, 11:01 PM
i hand sanded the whole truck,
i tried different things i started with one fender to see if it would look ok then did the rest of the truck
take ur time and dont rush. some people say you just have to take the clear coat off then prime it then lay color. i took it down as far as i could.

01-07-2010, 11:06 PM
Yeah that's what I have heard....take the clear off
clean454
01-07-2010, 11:08 PM
the clear is the hardest layer to sand off. then just scuff the paint with a high grit sand paper. if u use rough paper it will leave scratches and show on the final paint job.

oh i see, my bad. lol
riviera rider
01-10-2010, 05:32 PM
heres some info for you guys that want to know about prepping
if your going to seal the car before paint then you should do 320grit by DA
if you dont have to seal it, then do it to 400 grit by DA
if your hand sanding id reccommend something a little higher in grit because you may leave rough scratches by hand, but it is fine just takes longer
when prepping, try to knock off the clear if possible, if by hand you dont have to but the more clear/paint you sand off the better adhesion it will have
you do NOT have to take all the paint off unless you know what your doing i wouldnt do it
if you use a DA sander try not to angle it to sand out chips, keep it flat or you will have big bulls eyes in your new paint from uneven layers of paint sanded off in one area
if you guys need any more help let me know!
