Intermediate Steering Shaft


Does anyone know if this is covered under the powertrain warranty for an '05 with 36,476 miles on it?

No, it's not covered under the powertrain warranty, but it's a very known problem and you should be able to get it covered as a "goodwill" repair since it's a known problem.




GM should take care of it, but don't quote me on it.

Just give them the bulletin#, that's all you should need.

I just got this part form autozone for 75 bucks and will do this today

yeah, they aren't too expensive. the oem one from GM is only like $85 i believe.

you must be pretty handy, as it took me a little longer than 15 minutes to install

What are the symptoms that it needs to be replaced? Around what milage does it need replaced?

Don't have the issue but bulletin says "Clunking Noise Under Hood and Can Be Felt in Steering Wheel and/or Steering Column"

I have this issue on my truck. Went to the dealer and they said you can leave it or get it fixed. Its not broke so why should I spend $150 to fix it? When I am done with everything else then maybe I will pick one up and do it myself......

My inlaw's 03 tahoe had the same problem. They had it fixed a couple of times and eventually the dealer put an older model shaft on it. Problem solved.

I dont have any noticeable issue with mine. My truck has 61k miles on it. Whats hte normal life span of the ISS?

is this part really worth speding that kind of money? especially when you can fix it be disconecting the bottom of it and jerking it up and down (or in and out if you prefer) a few times and putting it back together, this cures the problem for probably 10k miles and can be done over and over

I haven't replaced mine yet, but anytime you can scoop a better replacement part for something with a known issue I consider it a worthy upgrade...we carry them at work so I get a pretty decent price on them too.

i called the dealer last year to buy the grease kit for it, but they don't sell it anymore. gm redesigned the shaft, so i went in and they were nice enough to give me the new design. if they didn't have a new design i would have got the borgeson one. the clunking wasn't bad at all, but it annoyed me.

yeah the clunking isnt that bad on mine, I just want to do some other things first. what did the new design cost you from the dealer? did you install it yourself?

Bringing this one back from the dead.... I hated the clunking in my steering wheel and thought it was something suspension related until I ran a search on this forum. I can't believe what a night and day difference the handling of the truck is now. It feels like a brand new ride.

I ended up going to the dealership and buying the new design. They wanted $92 but luckily I go there often enough they let me open a cash account and now I get wholesale prices so it cost me $73 (something that you guys might be able to work out with your dealers). I figured this was a good deal since its about $67 shipped from gmpartsdirect.com.

Just as an fyi for anyone looking to install this part. A lot of procedures mention to remove the gas pedal for trucks equipped with the power pedals. You do not need to do this and its a PITA to put the upper bolt back on once its off. You can just slide the heater duct extension off the main duct right under the steering wheel. Worked out great for me.

For anyone who has replaced theirs and noticed a difference, can you more accurately describe how the problem feels? I had my Tahoe in to the dealer a while back for some unrelated repairs but they mentioned that one of the noises they could hear was the ISS. I had them replace it last week when I had it in again and I don't really notice any difference so now I'm wondering if anything was wrong at all or if they didn't actually replace it. Yeah, I could've done it myself but I didn't feel like messing with it.

So how exactly does the problem feel? I feel stuff through the steering wheel but honestly I couldn't tell you if it's normal or not. It doesn't feel nice and solid like my wife's Lexus RX300 but my Tahoe is also basically a truck so I figured it wouldn't feel as nice. So how bad and/or noticeable is the clunking?

Basically you can feel the steering wheel bump or shutter as you are turning the wheel. Also, the bumps on the road feel a lot more dramatic than they really are. But the best way to see if you have the problem is to just turn the wheel at low speed and you can definately feel the effect of the dried out splines in the ISS.

Thanks! I'm kind of thinking I didn't need a new one afterall. I checked under the hood at lunch today and the ISS looks like a new part so I'm assuming the dealer did install one.

I finally changed mine on my 2000 Tahoe. Had the dealer do the "grease fix" many years ago, but the clunk came back. Thanks to the info on this site, I ordered one from gmpartsdirect.com for about $65 shipped and installed myself. Was not exactly a drop in fit. Had to do some fitting and filing on the end that goes into the socket leading to the gearbox to get ti together. Total time about 25 minnutes.

But yes, I can feel the difference,. Wish I hadn't waited son long.

Again, thanks to the great info on this board, I solved the problem.
