Here are some pics of the install of a double din Pioneer Avic-D3 in my 01 a while back. I took some pics of the brackets I fabb'ed and the the bezel I trimmed.
There are a couple different ways you can do this. One way is to trim the bezel, plastic weld ABS and re-finish the entire bezel. Another way is the way I did it below. I only wanted to spend one day on the entire install from start to finish so I did it the easier and faster way.

I took the clip brackets from a AI 95-02 GM truck dash kit. They need to be spaced apart 1/2" on both sides of the unit in order to clip back into the dash properly, so I used 1/2" scrap of MDF. I used my digital calipers to take measurements of where to drill the mounting holes and where to place the brackets so it would go into the dash right the first time.

The MDF spacers/mount:

The clips mounted to the spacers:
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd269/jkmotorsports/DSC06147.jpg

I removed the entire radio/hvac housing from the dash to make fitting and trimming easier.

Behind the radio, there is a metal bracket that is held in place by two rivets and two screws. The rivets can be drilled out, then the screws can be backed out to remove the bracket to make room for the new unit. Some units will require this bracket to be removed, some won't.
The trim bezel needs to be trimmed in pre-03 models to fit a dd unit. I used my Dremel, asst of files, and finally different grits of paper to trim and round-over the edges of the new opening to match the oem edges. Some people mention using a 03+ bezel, but the problem is that you'll need to reposition the HVAC controls, and the contour along the bottom edge of the bezel won't match up perfectly if you have the full legnth center console that butts up to the dash.

Do you have any pics of that lower monitor center console monitor set-up? I have been thinking of doing that exact same thing for my back-up monitor. I have the remote cassette deck and the cubby hole with a door there. Was thinking there would be some way of using the tape deck connection as an ipod hookup.

JK, what do you do for a living?

I'm loving the nav! This is something I can show to my wife and she will be all over it! I just changed the radio out in my 95 silverado so those adapters are looking very familiar right now. Good work.

how did you get into it?

I've always been into cars, electronics, and making things on my own whenever I could, so I took an electronics and automotive class in school. I worked on all my friends cars in school and a local shop took me in and that's where I started. I learned most of my fab skills from watching more experienced installers and also doing a lot on my own. I did more studying and acquired my MECP 1st Class and ASE A6 automotive electrical certs, and also did some studying in acoustical properties.

Yes, I agree...let's sticky this. This seems to be a common question dating back to the old tf.com site. Nice work on the '04 install JK. That looks really clean.

What did you use to fill in the sides of the DD?? Is that just more MDF or did you use an ABS plastic? Looks awsome BTW. I had to deal with this in my camaro and well its on the list for the truck.

Coopies is at least an 03 or newer model that has the corporate dd hu. You can tell by the hvac controls in his pic.

So for those who don't know, the 03+ models already utilize a dd unit, so all you need is the avg $20 dash kit. But unfortunately, to integrate with the databus controlled hu, you're also going to need the more expensive wire harness/module.

the picture where you built the bottom screen for the 04 with a dvd player. did you use mdf or what to build the trim around the tv? and old same with the cupholders/dvd player.

and also what did you cover or paint it with.

yea i didnt know if coopies was a 03+ LS or a 00-02 LS AC controls, i wish i could have a DD so bad, i would have to cut up my painted dash bezel to accommodate it...

So did you utalize dash kits from pre 03 and 03+ to get the flush finnish? I'm thinking of tackling the same job myself, I usually wouldnt even think of cutting or trimming the dash but you made it look pretty easy. I just want to make sure I can get the nice finnish look.

I used the brackets from the older pre-03 kit and cut the rest of the trim pieces myself.

JK, why are you using a D3?

I have one, and have learned it's quirks, but it's not really great at anything, but it is "good" at a few things

since they are aging, and becoming cheaper used, i was gonna get another just to prevent having to learn the quirks of another Navi system.

do you think I can use your method to put a DD in here:
it's a 2000 tahoe OBS

Hey JK, quick question for you on the 2002 truck DD install you did. (here: http://www.tahoeyukonforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=595)

When you cut your dash bezel, did you also trim the piece between the radio and the cliamte controls, or was it soley the top and top right of the radio's bezel?

I've got a 2002 Tahoe and got all the tools to do what you did (with the exception of the digital calipers). I'm still debating with myself to cust the radio cage out like you did too.

When replacing the stock stereo do you keep the functionality of your rear controls? I'm talking about the center console for the second row of passengers.
