View Full Version : least expensive way to drop my hoe

Alright, i think ive decided to drop my tahoe and put some 20s or 22s on it.
I think i'll probably just do a 2/3 drop but would entertain doing a 3/5 drop, but im sure a 3/5 will be more than what i want to spend.
So who can give me some pointers on the most economical way to drop my hoe?

Torson keys and springs it will be under 200, or you can just get the rear springs and turn down the torsons this is what a 2/3 looks like on 20's

Well the cheapest way would be to crank the torsions and cut the rear springs. I never said it was the safest. I would actually buy a kit with spindles though.
Stack your loot and do it right, 2/4 drop with spindles and springs along with some air helper bags would ride great. You can go the cheap route with keys and some ebay springs but you'll change it all later, trust me. Oh and anyone that cuts the springs on these trucks stay the hell away from me on the highway, shit is sooo sketchy cutting a progressive rate coil in a truck this heavy.

Somebody I work with did his that way with the keys and rear springs and it looks great for less than $300. He even says it rides better, if I drop mine I think that would be the route I take. I'm not sure if it makes a difference cuz I didn't look into yet but his is a 2wd mine is 4wd.

can you pm me a setup that you would recommend?? everything down to the last bolt......i was thinking 2/3...on my 2wd hoe...
What shocks are you running? The big ass gas shocks? Autoride? Front is easy, belltech 2508 spindles. Rear I would do some belltech or mcgaughey's 3" drop coils, shock extensions, and bilstein HD shocks for factory application at all four corners. Then buy some larger sway bars; hellwig, belltech, hotchkis, suspension techniques all come to mind. Also replace all your front end components with napa premium or moog products before they wear out and slowly cause the truck to ride like shit. My truck runs 10x better, rides REALLY well for the amount of drop, and handles 100x better than my friend's uber low mileage 06 Denali that I drove recently. I think that a truck running the aforementioned setup would be very fun to drive everyday, esp with a tvs blower under the hood.

drive it up to the top of the parking garage. Put a brick on the skinny pedal. Jump out. A dropped hoe.

I wouldnt ever cut a spring on any car and then take it on the road. Perhaps ill just wait a bit longer and save up to do it the right way.
excellent decision. I'm contemplating stock keys and buying control arms, love my 5" front drop tho.

Whatever drop im at right now im loving it..its technically a 3/5, but the front is up a little bit cuz my front end is worn out, and the rear has the "big gay shocks" that max and I discovered..once i switch out the shocks in back i will hopefully be down a little more..I wouldnt mess with the 2/3 cuz you will want to go lower..heres my "3/5" ish on 24s..the front is perfect for me and once the rear comes down a little more ill be happy

Thats something i'd like to to do my hoe to make her ride new again. I have a few friends with tahoes/suburbans with 100k+ miles that im sure would love to do this project.

I ckeckef Ebay everyday and was lucky enough to score a McGaughy's 3/5 kit with keys/spindles-front:springs/control arm relocator/sway bar linkage-rear
For $360. A deal like that goes quick so you have to look every day. I have seen 3/5's used on Craigslist here in Phx for less than $300

What exactly are the signs that the ISS needs to be replaced? I know they are a big problem area for our trucks...but i've never heaerd what the symptoms of a worn ISS are...

Steering wheel clunks, random uncentering of the steering wheel, excessive wheel adjustment at highway speeds. There is a bunch of info floating around, makes the trucks steer alot better tho.

crikey enough questions dude? do a bit of reading off cognito's website and you'll hopefully understand. they try selling you the entire pivot assembly and include the gusset, just welding a gusset for a napa replacement piece is more than enough imo
taken from cognito's website:
The Cognito Motorsports pitman idler arm support kit takes care of the issues with the centerlink side of the pitman and idler arms. There is however another weak link in the front IFS steering on the 6 and 8lug GM vehicles. The idler pivot assembly tends to wear out, bend, and even break under stress with as little as 35” tires. The idler pivot assembly is what the idler arm is mounted to, and pivots on. Cognito offers an aftermarket idler pivot assembly in order to strengthen your weak stock parts. The aftermarket Idler Pivot assembly has tapered roller bearings, adding strength and durability, thus creating a solid pivot point for your steering components. It doesn’t stop there. The idler pivot assembly mounting tabs tend to twist or even dislodge from the frame. Included with the kit is a weld in gusset in order to strengthen the weak factory mounting tabs. This kit is highly recommended, even more important than adding our heavy duty heim jointed tie rods. Play in the idler pivot can cause major tie rod issues. If the idler pivot assembly has an issue, the idler arm is able to move uncontrollably. As this happens you will have drastic tie rod angle changes. In certain instances a bent or failed part can cause complete disaster to your front end. Some damages may include: idler arm rubbing the transmission oil cooler lines or motor mount, pitman arm, idler arm, and tie rod breakage. Most tie rod problems stem from worn or damaged pitman and idler arms or idler pivot assembly.

Max, corrected me if I'm wrong but don't you do this for a living? At least i thought I remembered that from TF.
Either way, I am very interested in doing a complete suspension uprgrade and rebuild. My nearly 100k 03 Tahoe is in need to some suspension work.
My plans over the next two months are to piece together a complete set up and put it on all at once.
Key components to my upgrade are a 3/5 drop, sway bars, and new shocks (I have the oversized rear ones but not autoride). I will also take your advice and upgrade the stock components and mine needs the steering shaft repleacement.
So from the experts, what is a good budget for these parts?
Long winded post but all (helpful) input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon
I'm trying to finish skoo but work at a shop to pay the bills. I'd say 3/4 ton keys, belltech or mcgaughys springs, airlift helper bags, bilsteins, shock extensions, and all the front end stuff. I'd figure about $1000 for parts, front end stuff is expensive check out www.rockauto.com

i really want to drop my hoe... REAL bad... of course i catch a lot of shit for wanting to drop a Z71.
whats stopping me is the money its going to cost for me to drop the truck if the same cost to do things i REALLY want like LTs and Cams and all that...
anyways, Max still brings up a good point about the Inner + Outer Tie rod ends, Idler arm's and pitman arms... i am almost 100% sure i need to get all this shit replaced in my truck ASAP.

Preformance first, defiantly. I wanna do the same mods here. I wanna cam, headers, exhaust, etc. Then next year after the shock of the new room, New outdoor kitchen, new car, my bad tax bill, wears off. I will put a super charger on the silverado, and get some headers, cam, CAI, exhaust for the yukon.

IM not sure. My 06 had auto ride and my 07 does not, Cant say I notice much different other than the 07 might have a firmer ride.
My silverado has ride control and I can tell you the helper bags really help when I have a ton of weight in the bed (like 50 sheets of drywall, or lumber, and stuff)

Sway control and it prevents bottoming out. I still haven't done the free travel mod on my truck, just a half dozen other people's. The helper springs act as a bumpstop, mine lift the truck 1/2' with 7psi or so but it's worth the added height for the improved handling and ride improvement.
tybardy
05-20-2009, 01:49 PM
yea the height isnt my main concern as i will only be lowering my truck a few inches... but at the moment, as i mentioned, my suspension is shot and i am trying to get a feel for what i can/should do to improve the ride all the way around. $1000 puts me at waiting a little while so i can stack some bread though

put some blistine 5100s on there. People at the z71 site do that all the time. I have done that to the silverado and LOVE IT, Ride is so much better and truck has a much more solid planted feel on the road.
