View Full Version : Tool brand of choice?

JKmotorsports

My hand tools are Snap-On and Craftsman. My pneumatic tools are Snap-On and Dayton. All my power tools consist of Dewalt and Craftsman, and one Hitachi 18v driver that I actually like better than my Dewalt. My main toolchest is a 19 drawer roller bearing Snap-On with top storage.
I try to stick with Snap-on and Craftsman for most of my tools because of the quality and lifetime gaurantee.

What brand of tools do you guys prefer?

I like kobalt, But we have a snap on truck that visits the shop every month so we usually have snap on tools. I get kobalt from lowes when I need a tool right away.

A mixture of Mac, Snap on, and Craftsmen. They're pretty well constructed tools and have awesome warranties.

Snap on Limited Edition Laser Etched top draw with BS little things that come with limited boxes.

Cornwell roll around cart because it was super cheap.

But mainly it's snap-on tools with some craftsman stuff and Makita 3/8th drive cordless impact....I LOVE THAT THING!! Makes disassemble and reassemble really fast.

My roll around box is a craftsman. I really want a snap on but can't justify dropping the coin. Maybe if I used my tools for my job, then yes. But I can't justify $5000+ on a tool box for a hobby

Tools I like this subject. I may not have snap ons but im happy with what I have. I use mainly Mastercraft tools as they have lifetime warrantees on them. (Canadiantire). I also use sears craftsman tools. AIr I use Genius as I can get them cheap and man they work flawless. Work gave us a 7 drawer roll box. I managed to get another for 20 bucks and added 2 middle sections with some minor mods to it to make a rolling work station. Here are a few pics Please dont laugh to hard lol

Also I beleive in the right tool for the job. I have modified many tools to fit the job at hand. Oh and the 2 boxes under my bench are filled with some of the mechanisms I rebuild the 2 boxes are also mine. I have 3 boxes at home also and 2 big roll cabinets full of electric tools. No pictures of them though.
This isnt a work thread so I wont put pictures of what I do here I will save that for another thread.

I work for a small company called General Electric. AKA G.E. Lighting. We make G25 lightbulbs, par lights, and flourescent lamps. I'm a shift leader / machine mechanic. I'm the goto guy and get to rebuild mechanisms for the units. Been doing it for 21 years now. With all the layoffs i'm low man on the pole now too oh and yes I just bought my burb. Mostly Craftsman for me, have a few snap on, cornwell, mac, matco, and a few proto. Just a shade tree mechanic but I have well over $15,000 in tools. I can't justify the price of snap on when you compare the quality to craftsman, the only leg up snap on has is their ratchets. But if you spend the money and get the pro series craftsman they are pretty close.

To me, nothing comes close to the quality of a Snap On ratchet, I agree getting Craftsman sockets is good enough for most users.

For hand tools, I think Craftsman and Snap-on are great tools. Snap-on is a bit pricey though. I usually buy Snap-on when it's a tool that is going to be used extensively, for heavy-duty use, or a specialty tool. I'll go with Craftsman for most everything else.

Years ago I had that happen to me about a week after I bought a new MAC tool chest and loaded it with all my old tools and a few new ones I just bought. The shop was robbed and they swiped my tool chest along with a lot of equipment and a 76 Caddy I was getting ready for the Daytona Spring Break Nationals (I was living in Fla at the time).

Yeah, Really easy when the box rolls away, makes them easier to swipe. I'm afraid to drop the amount of coin it would take to get a good tool collection, afraid to see the bottom line on what the cost would be so I'll have to make due with what I have. They haven't let me down yet and that's the bottom line.

That's the worst, getting robbed at gunpoint, gives you the feeling of helplessness, fear of getting shot and anger that the fuckers don't have the balls to take your shit heads up. I had a car taken from me at gunpoint in Cali in the early 90's and that's what I felt. We are here and cool so that's what matters right?

First off, tool thieves suck! I had a 8k box roll out of one of my first shops I worked at, no insurrance thru the company...

On that not, my collection now sucks since I finished paying off my stolen tools 2 years ago. I am all about Craftsman handtools and electric. Air tools are assorted based on what I found for a good price when the time came to get them.

For those looking for new tools join the craftsman club. In their catalog they now sell their tools in modules so it makes it easier to get what you need without too many duplicates and lets you pick the specialty tools of your choice. Also their catalogs oftern have stuff you won't find in your local sears

mainly craftsman and Allen (allen is made by the same parent company the craftsmans come out of) bosch for power. and then thers a mix of odd and end brands from work for the "use it once applications"

anyone else have any of the gearwrench socket sets? the ones that are open through the center? have yet to break any of them and they really have come in handy.

well, my tools are quite a scattering of things i have been accumulating over the years since high school, lots of craftsman (most of which were hand me downs from my Pops) I have a huge husky wrench and driver set, a bunch of other god knows what brande tools (screw drivers, wrenches, loose sockets, and other misc items that float around in the bottom drawer)

As for power tools, i have been a carpenter for quite a long time now and i dont buy anything but DeWalt for cordless tools(just wish the batteries lasted a bit longer). Hitachi air tools are also great (i am regering to nailers)

Ridgid puts out a pretty nice prodcut

Mostly MasterCraft (Canadian Tire) same quality as Craftsman. I love the fact that you can bring back a wrench or ratchet with snipe marks all over it and no one asks any questions they just give you a new one and carry on. Getting warranty out of Snap-on and Mac is a little more complicated but i do have some of their stuff for the high use tools that i relied on daily when i was pulling wrenches.
We use alot of "wrench extenders" (snipes) in my industry so tool breakage is common.

Hand Tools = Craftsman
Power Tools = Chicago Electric/ Craftsman/ Dewalt

If I'm going to spend a higher price, I want a lifetime guarantee. But most of the cheap tools I purchased from Harbor Freight have been surprisingly holding up well. (Chicago Electric)

I usually buy Craftsman. Mix that with whatever I steal from work. At work we usually use mostly Snap-On. The Marine Corps pays for the Snap-On tools. I gots no fancy tool boxes cause I got no garage.

Snap-on, Matco, Craftsman for quality tools... if I need something cheap that I do not plan on using very much... Stanley or Husky...

Depends on what I'm buying. A brief list of what I have/own

Sockets- Craftsman 1/4, 3/8's and 1/2 drives (Metric and SAE)
Ratchets- Snap-On 1/4, 3/8, 1/2.
Wrenches- Snap-On and Craftsman
Air Impacts- Matco 1/2, and a Snap-On 3/8's
Impact Sockets- Matco 1/2 and 3/8's (Metric)
Electric Impact- Snap-On 3/8's
Electric Screw Gun- Snap-On
Extensions and Joints- Snap-On
Body Panel Tools- Matco
Pliers and such- Chanel-locks
Screwdrivers- Craftsman. I'd like to get a Matco set
Grinders- Milwaukee and Blue-Point

I personally like Snap-On tools. Not impressed with their air or electric tools. But hand tool wise, totally worth the money. When I buy tools, I buy something that is going to last me. Kinda why I buy Snap-On/Matco/Craftsman

My Father started as a truck driver/distributor for Mac and is now a higher up for the Eastern half of the US...I've accumulated quite a good bit of Mac tools over the years, I love it when a distributor leaves for another job and leaves his truck in my dad's care, usually get hella good deals on that stuff as they destock a truck.

Had great times when I was a kid going to the Nascar and NHRA stuff with him, I think thats what really got me into modding my vehicles.

Snap-On is the most over priced stuff on earth... top notch tools for 3 times more money then they are worth. Only a handfull of snapon tools that are worth their money.

Over Priced? Not really. If you use tools everyday for a living they are not. I use mine everyday (Monday threw Friday, and then weekends on my own time). I get my use out of them. If your only using them once in a great while in your own garage, then I don't see much of a reason to buy Snap-On, Matco or Mac.

Most of my tools are Snap-On or Matco. Personally, I would not choose anything else. Craftsmans tools are junk now. And the stuff you can buy at a store is great for a while, but with no warranty, I'll pass. My snap-on and matco rep's are great about warranty.

Craftsman all the way for me. Mainly because I'm not a mechanic that has a truck with tools for sale that visits me at work. My home garage is my shop. My power tools are Craftsman C3 19.2V cordless tools. My air tools are also Craftsman, as well as my 25 gallon air compressor. For me the choice is simple: Turn right off the freeway and go to Lowe's for Kobalt tools, or turn left and go to Sear's. As for the warranty problems with Craftsman, I haven't run into them. I take a broken tool into Sears and they give me a new one with no questions asked.

I use Craftsman, S&K for hand tools and for air tools I only use IR @ home and work. I do have some Snap On or Mac stuff but I usually only buy them when it's a specialty tool and can't find it in craftsman.
