View Full Version : Does anyone have two sets of wheels/tires for summer/winter use?

Since my Tahoe came the the standard 17" wheels and tires I figured I would used those though this winter and then in the spring get a nice set of 20's and use those until winter again and put the 17" wheels/tires back on. Wash, rinse, repeat.
But what a PITA to have to keep getting the truck reprogrammed at the dealer for the different tire/wheel combo (unless I can find someone with a tech2) so that might just keep me away from doing it and just going to 20's and leaving it at that.

Are you going to get them reprogrammed each time? Or do you not have that problem/option for an 05?

Interesting.
There are TSB's for 2007+ on how to reprogram for 20/22's. I guess w/o doing it you run the risk of throwing codes, not to mention the speedo from being off. Interesting though the TSB says going from factory 20 to 22's for everything but the Denali doesn't need reprogramming. Weird.

I have my 24s on and during the winter I am definitely putting on my stock 17s. No need to reprogram, I have TPMS on the stock wheels, no reason for any issues!

Yeah I have my 24's on for the summer then I put the stock 20's on for winter. I haven't had to reprogram anything and I have the TPMS on both sets as well.

Well as long as the tire diameter stays the same the truck will never notice the difference. I checked the specs on stock 17's and 20's and the diameters are different enough resulting in more revolutions per mile for one of them so things like speed an ABS sensors won't be operating optimally.

I'm not 100% but i'd check that again if I were you, are you sure the ABS and TC doesn't operate off speed sensors in the hubs? if so, there shouldn't be any issues..
Anyway, you don't need a techII to change things up, just a copy of HP Tuners, if you were nearby I'd take care of it for you :)

I'm sure they do but isn't still making calculations off the programmed tire diameter? It's not a huge difference between the 17 and 20 size, like 10 revs per mile so its probably not significant enough to make much of a difference but I'd hate to find out otherwise.
Maybe I'm being too critical but I had a vehicle before with upsized tires and had a wrong speedo and ABS that was spotty at best, I don't want to revisit that again.

Thanks, I knew there was some other tools out there that could do it (unfortunately my scanner doesn't) but I don't know anyone with one of those either. LOL
All this may be moot anyway since I can't get my preferred tires in 20's.

I have 24s and the stock 20s. I have interchanged them a few times and never had any issues. Both have the TPMS, so all I do when I interchange them is select relearn tire positions and follow that procedure to do the relearn.
As far as speedo or other things being off, I don't think I have any issues on that side either. I would think it would be off when I have the 24s on there, but I have drive past one of those street signs with the built in radar on them and the speed on there matched what my speedo said.

my tahoe came with stock 20's and the speedo is actually off and is 2mph slow according to my gps. i have 17" wheels and tires that i use for winter with stock size tires 265/70/17 i beleive and the speedo is dead on. there is not that much difference that it will throw anything off between the 17 and 20's
