View Full Version : Ebay reverse camera install write-up

Here's some pics of the install I did for the ebay reverse cam. Let me know if you have any questions that weren't answered here.
Step 1: Remove dash cowling by firmly pulling straight out on the boarder.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01780.jpg
Step 2: Remove the blanks from the bin. I just ended up putting the TC inside the dash. I never turn it off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01784.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01785.jpg
Step 3: I removed the bolt holding the AC vent so I could get to the clips holding the blank in a little easier. Then I removed the blank bin.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01788.jpg
Step 4: I installed the camera to the license plate. I ended up taking some diagonal cutters and notching out a small channel at the top of the plate to allow a little more wiggle room for the camera cable.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01792.jpg
Step 5: Route the camera/power wire. I took the wire from the camera behind the bumper and up through the hole by the body mount. Then I routed the wire up through the cavity for the LH taillight and end cap. The day light in the second pic is looking up from under the Hoe into where the taillight normally is.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01796.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01797.jpg
Step 6: I spliced the wires directly into the reverse light power and ground. I didn't use a fuse anywhere, just spliced it up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01798.jpg
Step 7: I routed the rest of the wire through the vent flaps under the end cap into the back then along the paneling that runs under the LH window. From there I just routed it up under the door sills and up to and under the dash. Plug it into the screen and Presto!
***Note*** I had JUST enough wire the way I routed it. If you received the same amount I did, then it's possible.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01799.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01800.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/IDP/Tahoe/DSC01803.jpg
Like I said, hit me up with any questions. The way it's wired, it will come on and turn off automatically when you put it in reverse and take it back out.
EDIT: That white stuff on the box is silicon. I basically removed all doubt of it being weather proof. And I eventually will clean off a spot on the frame and actually stick the box to it.

Thanks.
So I'm guessing that the main control box is indeed waterproof?

I made it waterproof by putting silicon all over it

It's awesome during the day. I'm definitely going to have to get some brighter bulbs for night time reversing. It's pretty decent at night if there are street lights around, but if it's pitch black out, then it really doesn't work that well.

Let me know what you end up doing. I'm not a big fan of it myself, but at the end of the day, I only spent $30 on the stinkin thing.

Can the reverse wire be spliced to the trailer harness?

Can the reverse wire be spliced to the trailer harness?
That I'm not sure of. I think the only time you have constant power going to the trailer harness is when you have your lights on. Other than that, I believe the wires aren't hot until a ground is provided either thru actuating the brake or a turn signal. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

If you guys are talking about the 7 pin harness:
Constant 12V
Ground
Reverse lights
Left turn
Right turn
Parking lights
Trailer brake power

You first need to find out if power is getting beyond the box, then to the screen. Check point to ground with power applied to the harness. If' you're getting power all the way up to the screen, then it's probably the screen that's messed up. Not sure what you would do at that point.

yeah, there is power getting up to the screen. i was able to diagnose that part. just wish i knew enough about the circuitry to find out why the screen isn't working.

Yeah, I can't figure mine out, either. It worked for like ten minutes. Then it was sort of random and intermittent. Now it just doesn't have anything on the screen. Wish I had another monitor I could hook it to to see if that is indeed the problem.
Dropmech--Do you think that the image from the camera would show on another screen hooked up via the S-video connector? Maybe you could check since you are the only one with a working unit....lol.
If it'll work, I may just find some other monitor as an alternative.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I don't have anything available to me though to test it out. If you want to send me your screen, I can hook it up to mine just to make sure your wiring isn't all messed up. Just because you're getting power to the screen doesn't mean it's the right power.

True enough. I appreciate the offer, but right now I'm not that concerned about it. $30 toy, didn't work, oh well....lol.
Got bigger projects that need to get done before I play with that again, although I imagine it'll bug me enough after a while that I'll want to take another stab at it.

I'm not sure what the Denali interior looks like so I'm not sure the same item would fit. You can email the guy selling them and ask him. Just go to the link on ebay for it. I think it's in this thread somewhere.

It is the same but with a cubby hole there. I could make it work as long as the screen is similar to yours. I looked on Ebay(not the link) and could not find anything but I'll click on the link and do some digging!
Just followed the link and did not work.

What fits perfectly in the cubby without hacking my dash? The HOT eBay one. How do I get this? The Shark model off goodeals18? Anyone have this one? This mod is a great idea, just don't want to cut and modify my dash pieces. Thanks for your help!

Hey! Great write-up on the reverse camera installation. I have a question for you - I am installing one into a Yukon 1500 and the cutout in the dash trim looks just like yours. What did you do to hold the monitor in place? It looks great in your pics, but I can't tell what you used. Also, both my camera and monitor require power separately - did you run power for both from the rear tail lights, or just the monitor?
Thank you for your help!

As far as holding it in, the same notches that the blanks used to clip in are the same that the monitor uses to clip in. The monitor has the correct flaps around it that click into place. For the power, I tapped into the fuse box for the monitor. I can't remember which one it was. I'll try to look tomorrow. Then I just spliced into the power lead for the light in the back to power the camera.

Are there any part numbers, manufacturer's numbers, or names on the monitor? What are the dimensions of the monitor as this seems to be the critical part for the dash installation?

I was hoping the OP still had the product info on the thread listed product. Unfortunately posting an e-bay link is time sensitive and if a thread lasts more than a few months those links become useless.
I looked at the web page you provided and it looks like the front surround has a clear cover over it, while dropmech's system pretty much matches the color of the interior and fills the space below the register like it was OEM. Is that a ring of LEDs around the camera aperture? Do they light up every time you go into reverse?
I have a '06 Z71 Tahoe and I don't follow about the on-star button, mine are on the rear view mirror.

The ring of LEDs are just infrared LEDS they have a slight red glow to them at night only when it is turned on. have to be looking at it to notice them. just like ALL infrared cameras that are everywhere nowadays.
the on star button was down below that AC vent but our later models have the tractoin control button there. i moved ours to the glove box, wires were perfect length etc. our monitor fits the hole perfectly. ive installed two now, one on our XL and one on my dads 06 silverado

05 nali, look in my other threads on our camera...the TC button just pops out of that plastic piece, leaving a nice square box. wires are perfect length to reroute to the glove box and just double stick tape the button into that section of the glove box on the left thats divided. cubbycam's website has the picture. here i googled it for you to save some time
http://www.cubbycam.com/store/images/inline/TractionButtonInGlovebox.jpg
and if u want specifics on my camera install, look for my newbie here thread where i posted all of our mods. i used an ebay camera on mine and total cost was like 50 bucks for camera and monitor.

thanks, i have since moved my tc toggle there to add a cubby hole instead of the plastic there. So now i just need to find a monitor that will fit in there nice and snug and look decent. I am ready to pull the trigger on this finally and just need to find a monitor

Great write up. One question. Did you just wire the camera and the monitor to the same place? I couldn't really tell. If so does the camera come on when you unlock the doors and the reverse lights come on? How did you get around this? if at all?
