I understand how to adjust them, lift the handle and they move, but I can't figure out how to take them off totally.

On the back you have to remove the torx screws and remove the back "feet." The all you have is the exposed rail and you can slide the cross rail all the way back till it comes off. And it's easier with two people, otherwise youhave to keep going from side to side shifting each side down a foot. Have a towel down too so you don't scratch the roof.

There's a little cap on the back part of the rack that just pops off, then its just a matter of moving the crossbars to the back.http:///hphotos-snc1.fbcdn.net/hs125.snc1/5400_116990027477_501297477_2355297_382995_n.jpg

In case it's still not totally clear, there's a small RETAINING TAB on the UNDERSIDE of the end caps. You need to press that tab from the underside (with a screwdriver) in order to then slide the cap off the end of the rail. Once the cap is off the end of the rail, you can then slide the cross bars off the rails.
It was so unclear how to actually get the end caps off that I ended up taking the entire roof rack -- cross bars still attached to side rails and all -- off in one connected piece. It wasn't until I had the thing off completely that I figured out how to detach the end caps from the side rails.
Hope this helps.

Do you mean underside as in going in from the headliner? I was able to get mine off without pulling the headliner, just took a screwdriver and pressed the tab when I lifted the black cap up. You should be able to see it when you start tearing in to it.

What?? Nooooooo.... Not through the headliner. LOL Geez, that would be a mess. No, the underside of the CAP. I had to take off the whole rack assembly in order to really see the underside of the cap to determine just how it came apart from the rail.
