I have stock 17" wheels on my 04 tahoe which currently have the 265/70/r17 tires on them. I was looking to put something like a 15" rim on w/ an off road tire, possibly for good...but mainly as a fall/winter tire when i do some off roading and encounter snow and ice.
has anyone ever had a set of 15's on? what do i look for in backspace and such? I think the rear brake caliper bracket needs to be shaved like an 1/8" in order to clear them. I tried a set of 15x10" rims that were on a buddies 97 chevy they were American racing rims i believe. It bolted right up in front no problems, his tires were just too tall and wide to clear my bumper/inner fenderwell. SO i was looking at something like a 15x8, but i need the specs in order to make sure it will clear my calipers, i assume that backspacing is the measurement i am looking for or is it something else?
any help would be appreciated...and if you wondering why the rim change and not just a tire change..it is because a 31x10.5x15 is a lot cheaper than buying a 265/70/r17..and because there are more off road style tires available in a 15.

I have some stock 16s on my truck. Not sure if 15s would fit.

15's shouldnt fit. i know for certain if you have drums on the back it wont since the drums are 15 inch. and i barely clear the tape wheel weights with 16's in the front.

If the guys at your tire shop are worth anything they ought to be able to help you figure something out.

Sorry to Highjack !!!!!
speaking of stock tires some one broke in to my garage and jack some of my tools and my original stocks for my Tahoe, now I'm out searching for a stock pair with Sensors
16"+ will fit, the older body style can run 15s but the brakes won't clear on your truck. I can't run smaller than 20" on the front of mine :boti:

IF you'll start a thread in the wanted section you might get more bites.

i had a set of 15x10s on there... would just need to trim the rear caliper bracket by like 1/4" (one little corner of it)... for whatever reason his bolted right on the front and worked fine, and would work on the rear w/ that trimming. My dilema is... if i go to a 15x8 what backspace i need in order to have em clear. But i suppose i should just go to the tire store and ask if they can test fit a few wheels for me.

yeah u could grind down the caliper but ppl don't want 2. my dad has 2 sets of 15x8 and 15x10 old toyota wheels. i got bored and tried 2 see if they fit my tahoe one day and they barely rub on the rear like ur talkin about. so either grind or get spacers.

why would you want 15s unless you are going to put big ass tires on them?

I want them to put more aggressive off roading tires on for the fall and winter when i go off roading and encounter snow. Basically a 15" rim gives the ultimate choice in tires, with a heck of a lot better price. Unless someone can tell me where to get some 265/70r17's for like $150 a tire??? At least with the 15's i can get some swamper tsl radials, or even no name mud tires for a fraction of the cost of a 17" one. Priced out cooper STT's in a 265/70/r17 and they want 220/ tire..and these are not a "common" brand. Set of wrangler duragrips was over a 1000 for 4 tires.
So i was looking for 15" rims to put aggressive off road tires on...and then come summer i will run my stock 17's, which have an all-terrain highway tire.
