Aftermarket gas tank???

Hey guys.. new here but have a quick question... is there any way to put an aftermarket gas tank where the spare tire is suppose to be? I travel alot and with the gas prices getting higher every day it makes more since to put an aftermarket tank in and fill up at the cheapest gas station. Any insight into this would be appreciated. BTW... i have a 99 tahoe LS with the 5.7 4wd 4dr. Thanks guys

Would this be like a second (reserve) tank that you could just flip too if cheaper gas was not around?

Yea I think he wants to add a second tank so he can hold more gas so when he finds a station with cheap gas, he can really load up on it. I don't think he really needs it as a reserve tank, even though it kinda will be one in the same

I think there'd be a way to make it work but then what do you do with your spare tire? Plus the added weight would cause you to get worse MPG which in my mind is a bit counter productive. You'd have to get a custom fuel cell I think.

Anything can be done, look into some racing cells.

MY question is this though, I notice around here the price changes about $.10 from one place to the next. I have a suburban with a 42 gallon tank. We are talking a $4.00 difference from the most expensive to the cheapest (in my area). Would all the parts and work really be worth it?

the price difference around here varies alot. Not only that but i go from California to Montana once a month. Im just trying to get it so i dont have to stop for gas so often or hope the next town isnt outrageously priced. Im not saying ill ever get around to actually putting a tank in there.. its just an idea im throwing around. Id even go for taking my stock one out and throwing in a 50 gal replacement if i could find one. Any clue as to where to look??

I would just start googling custom fuel cells if you're real interested. Be prepared to fork over some coin, though, but that's your best bet.

I know that my father-in-law's 94 has a 30 gal tank. That's the biggest you can get OEM I believe. Not sure the fitment between trucks and tahoes, though.

not that it means much but I've never heard of the GM trucks having a 42 gal tank. Have you seen this or heard of this somewhere?

I haz a 42 gallon tank...standard on a burban. My tahoe is like 24 gallon or something like that.

But yeah a custom made cell is your best best or google large capacity tank for under teh truck. I kow these are around I have seen them for the pickups.

Yup, they hold a ton. I picked this thing up and had no idea. it had a 1/2 tank and I still put almost $90 worth of fuel into it

if i went to a salvage yard and grabbed a 42 gal tank out of a 90s burban do you guys think i could put it in the tahoe? I know its gonna take some fabbing but is it even possible?

would probably be too long for the hoe.. as the burban is longer wheelbase giving it the extra room.

yeah.. im gonna look into it a little more and take some measurements. It would be pretty cool to get some more mileage between fillups.
