Tired subject but quick ?

I am looking at getting a cheaper programmer... i dont use this thing for intense driving or hauling just a daily driver/ road trip vehicle. looking to squeeze a little more mpg out of the 5.3. looking at purchasing k&n system with hypertech programmer ( i know most ppl say blackbear or diablo) but i dont need the best of the best. Would hypertech serve the purpose of just getting a little more bang for buck? I can get the hypertech max energy power programmer for 300 with my discount. looking at k&n 63 series + hypertech for total of 540... any other thoughts...the discounted deal ends tonight just wondering what anyone else thinks... also looking to do a tune up ( hit 70k recently) any suggestions on what i need to be getting for a basic tuneup?

Don't bother with the Hypertech. I have one and it is basically worthless. Save that $300 and get the Blackbear tune. Really.

But install the CAI before getting the tune.

If you don't want to get a Blackbear tune, then just save your money. The K&N CAI and the Hypertech will not improve your gas mileage AT ALL. That Hypertech and K&N will never, ever pay back the $540 you spend to buy them.

Either leave it stock and save your money or get the Blackbear. Simple as that.

As far as the tuneup goes: transmission fluid flush, rear diff flush, front diff flush (if you use 4WD a decent amount), maybe time for a Seafoam treatment, check the brakes and brake fluid, check the tranny lines (mine are leaking at the rubber section near the tranny cooler--replacement is covered under my warranty), check coolant, and you should be good to go......

x2 on this! I've had a Hyptertech in a previous vehicle and I saw almost NO change at all and would not do this again. I've had the K&N Intake on several other vehicles and see minimal gains with that but now I normally just get the K&N filter on it's own because then you never have to buy another air filter again for that vehicle. Anyway, either stay stock or go BB so that you actually get something for your money!!!

and this is why i use this forum... ppl know their stuff =-) ... as for the suggestions the transmission was flushed the day i bought it at 62,000 the tires are rotated every 4-5000 unless we have alot of bad weather or roads rotars on rear were almost new when i bought it... the front ones were replaced 2000 miles ago... oil is changed every 3-4000 with castrol edge and lucus fully syn. oil additive. Diff fluid change sounds good havent done that yet.... radiator fluid was checked by a GMC tech ( personal friend ) said it looked good still... not sure about a seafoam never done one can anyone elaborate on what or how to do this... and any suggestions on engine tune up... a mechanic buddy said to do new plugs and possibly wires at the minimum. and thanks for the info on the programmer, ive never used one but that too was a suggestion from the mechanic friend... and k&n well ive been partial to them since my jeep days =-) still in the blood i guess

You're probably a little early to do plugs/wires unless they're abnormally worn. Just pull a couple of the cables and inspect them...and pull one of the plugs to see what kind of shape it's in. You can probably wait until 90-100k to do plugs/wires on these engines if everything else has been maintained up to par.

I forgot to mention the transfer case, as well. If you use 4WD a decent amount have the front diff and transfer case flushed along with the rear differential.

Also, no real need to change the engine oil every 3000-4000 miles especially with synthetic fluids. I follow the oil life indicator in the DIC and it usually lasts around 6000 miles. It won't hurt to change the fluid more often, but it's just a waste of money and oil.

Search the forums or Youtube for info/directions on the Seamfoam treatment. It's super cheap and super easy.

I have a K&N CAI installed on my '07 and I absolutely love it...but I definitely didn't gain any fuel economy out of it. It sounds badass and looks great, though!!! You might see a few more peak horsepower with a CAI but how often do you hit those peak RPMs? Same goes for the Hypertech programmers...you might get a few peak horsepower, but it does nothing for every day drive-ability.

The subject of the front diff brought a question to my mind because I do not use the 4wd very often. In fact, it's probably only used a hand full of times a year. Based on that, does that fluid ever need to be changed since it's rarely used or is there a 'shelf life' to the diff oil??

Since i have owned the vehicle i have not used the 4x4 mode. but i cannot speak for the previous owner. from what i understand he used the vehicle for a daily driver to and from amarillo to canyon (20 miles) for school and of course his other things he had to do and for road trips with friends. So alot of the miles are highway but as i said i am unsure about the 4x4 mode. do you think i should flush the diffs and t-case. also can you think of anything else i should look at in order to keep the vehicle in top condition... oh and on a side note i do have an alignment done as well fairly often ( lifetime alignment/roation/balance ) at firestone so i usually make sure all that stuff is in good shape.

The diffs are vented and will pick up moisture. It's never a bad idea to change thier fluid at regular intervals, regardless of the infrequent 4x4 use.

Wow i emailed blackbear but i guess i didnt realize that a tuner alone from them would cost me 600$ ... is this really worth that kind of money just for gas mileage... this is not a performance vehicle ... everything is factory basically ... i just dont know i wanna drop that kinda dough on simply trying to squeeze a few more mpgs out of the thing...

I'm looking to get one in the future too but from what I understand you'll get MPG's but also much better performance and acceleration. Much better than any other product out there. You can throw 300 down on a CAI and not see ANY difference so that makes the $600 for the BB tune seem worth it to me considering all the folks that have seen a "night and day" difference with it

just not sure i wanna do that... the K&N is gunna happen regardless... buyin one from a buddy that took it off his identical yukon before he sold it... mainly cause i asked him to HA!! sorry for the buyer, plus he owes me a few favors so gunna get the K&N dirt cheap.... but ill consider the BB tune they did offer me 2 options... the scan cable and the autocal.... for what im trying to do which one would you guys prefer? new to programmers all together... just looking for all the input i can get before i make a decision to do anything and i really apprecaite the feedback so far

any thoughts on the Blackbear scan cable vs. the blackbear autocal?

wow 600? just do their in person tune for 250. I did that as a few of my friends at fsc.com too.

I was wondering the same thing. Is there a way you can make it stay in 4cyl mode for longer, like on interstate going around 65 or 70? I know you dont need mych power to keep the truck moving at these speeds. Im not giong to get an expensive CAI but I do plan on moding the stock system to get better MPGs and I want to get a progamer if it is worth it.
