View Full Version : Won't crank. Battery good. No codes.

Ok. So the hoe has done this twice now recently (last 7 days). I turn the key, all the dash lights light up, but the starter will not engage. The battery shows good voltage on the meter. The kicker-

To fix it, I disconnect the negative battery lead for a minute, then reconnect it, and it fires right up. No codes, No nothing. WTF? Anyone seen anything like this before? I searched, and did not find.

bad connection at battery, or starter? When truck won't start, will headlights come on full?

HAHAHA. Yeah, I've replaced all the wires, and cleaned all the connections I couldn't replace, with a wire brush. Lights come on, everything looks awesome, other than the regular idiot lights on the dash telling me I have no oil pressure, etc., just like every other time I start it. And the voltage on the battery looks good taken from elsewhere on the truck, like back of the alternator, and a random ground. Next time it does it, I'm taking video. I think my truck is just possessed.

I'm trying to contact the local archdiocese (spelling?) for a possible excorcism.

Does it click? Have you banged the starter and then try and crank it? Does it have 12 volts at the starter when it doesn't start?

aaahhhh i think i know what it is !!!

Auxilliary Blinker Fluid Reservoir is low

I have not checked either the starter voltage or the aux blinker fluid res levels. I will check the starter voltage next time it does it, but I'm relatively certain it has juice, since the top of the new cables have power. But you know how that goes. It is one more thing to rule out, right? I'll top off the blinker fluid when I get home.

Does it have a factory security system? Was one of the issues I had to eliminate when I was redoing my truck. Maybe the issue just another item on the list!

I would try hitting the starter with a mallet or something

did you replace the actual ground cable at the battery. If you disconect and reconect and it fires then it might just be that bad ground. I know mine did the same thing, and was about to replace the starter and ended up checking and replacing the ground and i was good to go.

I think your flux capacitor is going bad.

Check it on the actual post, not on the cable or the nut.

Check your ground really good.

Bang the starter around.

There are other reasons this might happened but those are the "WTF who would of ever thought that" type of shit.

I did replace all of the wires that touch the battery, or have more than a couple amps going through them, including cutting and retermintating the one that goes across the top of the radiator to the aux post on the relay panel. Everything.

I couldn't hear the solenoid kick when I turned the key. That was what got me about it.

I'm sure there was a factory security system, but there was also a clifford alarm in it right before i bought it, and it looks like it was professionally installed, so I'm sure they killed the factory alarm. I'll have to look up info on the factory alarm though just to double check it though, because todd from burien was a really crappy electrician. Good call.

is the clifford still in it? could be a starter kill gone bad.

The brain unit is gone, although it looks like only the brain has been removed. The siren, long-range antenna, etc., are all still in place. I've left them as a visual deterrent while I figure out on my other thread which alarm I'm going to buy/install. I don't know anything about alarms. Can someone tell me where the factory security system is, and where I should look for a starter kill box?

the starter kill is a relay in the column. shouldnt really be a problem if the brain is out, and i really doubt it would fix itself. as for the factory alarm, i dont know much about em. mine didnt even have one. just keyless entry.
the only thing i can think is that these trucks use a passlock system that may be messed up, hence why pulling the ground fixes it. (resets the system)

I'm going to call this fixed. It stopped doing it after I replaced the battery. Who'd have thought?
