View Full Version : Denali vs Yukon

As I move closer to stepping into my first GMC/Chev, the Denalis caught my eye. As they seem to have a fair amount more "stuff" than other models, does that tend to bring in more problems? A friend of mine has had several Expeditions, and I learned you stay away from ANY air suspension with them. Leather seats in the lower end Fords tend to look like crap fairly soon, the list goes on.
So, anything to look for, and ANY help appreciated. I am going to get a lot of hassling when there is a GMC in the driveway, but the Chev/GMC SUVs just seem to have it together. Thanks

I wished I would have bought the Denali, IMHO, do the Denali now....

The Denali is a better choice to go with. They are pretty strong cars but the OEM leather is not strong, tends to crack, sag and look nasty after some time if not properly takes care of.
If you plan on altering the suspension in any way you may run in to some issue with the Autoride/AWD, but its not ever too big of an issue.

Buy the Denali. Mine has 104K miles and everything still works fine. The leather still looks new too. I have a couple bulbs blown in the dash, but I'd say thats normal for any vehicle.

i have 130k on mine. bulbs are all fine. never had a problem besides the wheel bearing. which is typical lol considering it has 130k on it. driver side leather is showing signs. just because im a lazy ass and i slide across the side of it every time. id go with the denali. idk what id do without mine.

Hey, where did you get your license plate LEDs and how did you replace them? thanks

Suspension will stay stock. I just DO NOT want a white Expedition, and life will be fine. (It would look like a work staff vehicle.)
I am guessing cloth is not an option in these?

Got them off ebay...just do a search for "194 white led". I think mine have 7 led's in them. Here's an Item number: 220426482318
They are super easy to install. Just reach up behind the bumper and twist them out just like a corner marker bulb.

Denali AWD
Yukon 2WD or 4x4
Denali More Luxurious
Yukon Better looking Tahoe
Denali differences in the exterior trim
Denali Bigger engine
I should have got a Nali.

Everybody knows that chevy is the cheap version of gmc, and gmc is the cheaper version of the escalade. Thats hows the chain goes.

as much as I love the escalade round here I would get pulled over every day cause cops would wanna make sure I was not a drug dealer.

I hate when people ask me why didn't I just get an escalade. I hate the way escalades look, plus a denali is everything an escalade is minus some extra fake wood and a random 20 odd horses. For that they want an extra 8k.
Having said that the mileage is about the same as the 5.3 tahoe, despite the bigger engine and awd.
It really boils down to what you're gonna do with it. If you're gonna life it up and go offroad get a tahoe/yukon for the low range alone. Otherwise I'd say spring for the denali.

+1 same reason the only mods my cars get are to increase comfort and utility...no flashy wheels and whatnot.

I cant wait to sell my escalade wheels. they came with the truck and are way to flashy for me. Also they dont flow with the truck.

This is going to be my wife's ride. She has had enough of the mini van, and I got the last pick when I got my truck.
The Yukon or Denali will be used for running around town, trips to Oregon from WA, (about 150 miles one way), grocery store etc. We have three kids, 7,9 and 11, and we would like to have the room. The chances of me tricking this thing out is slim to none, but we both like slight mods, (hey, we are both 40, and there is a Shelby in the garage next to a tricked out Fairlane, so thats where we get crazy).
Two reasons on the GMC, one, due to a family history, I have always said I would never own a Chev, (more of a pride thing in high school with muscle cars in the eighties), so I gotta have a GMC. Besides, as a friend of mine who was part owner of a GMC dealership said, "GMCs are better than Chevs, because we use lock washers!" Most of all, I want a vehicle from an American company.

IF you plan on garaging the nali and an XL will fit then get the XL especially with 3 kids as there is not much room behind the 3rd row seats for storage if all 3 rows of seats are being used. I can't get an XL in my garage or i'd have and xl. whoever said that the 6.0 awd mpg is close to the same of a 5.3 hasn't driven a nali on a daily basis. I get between 12-13 in town and on a good down hill trip to texas will maybe get close to 16 on the highway. my 99 gmc sierra ec 2wd 5.3l was getting 15 in town and 19 on the hwy. that being said if you want something for small road trips and can afford the gas get the nali...otherwise look into a z71 tahoe that gives you much of the same features, but with the 5.3l and non awd...(can switch from 2wd to 4wd) and save on the gas a bit...imho. I sometimes wish this was the route I went in Feb.

That is the question, who built it and where, and where does the money go. So when looked for a new lawn tractor, do I buy one who's parent company is U.S. but it is built foreign, or do I buy say a Kubota, that is built in Georgia and is a Japanese corporation. Same with my in-laws Toyota, built in U.S., but a Japanese company.
Heck the Detroit Diesels in our fire engines are owned by a German company, I believe.

x2 gas mileage kinda blows. and the XL is the shit. i can seat 6 or 7 ppl comfortably, pass on the highway no prob, and still have a big ass sub box in the back. :)

I'd have to agree, If I could do it again, I'd grab a Denalli XL in a heartbeat!! With my third row up, i literally have no storage space.
XL is fucking huge. I think my Denali is perfect even with a decent sized sub box, wish the made a rcsb Denali truck...I'd love to build one that layed frame with a t-56 and a nasty 600hp na smallblock.

I've owned 2 denalis, bought my first one when the new body style first dropped...I've always averaged 15-16 mpg...but I drive 3 over the limit at all times.
XLs look like a bus.

If you like chrome or feel the urge to do a lot of custom paint and or body work go with the yukon!
If you aren't a big chrome fan and/or don't want to do to many modifications go with a denali!
Either way your gonna enjoy yourself and have a great vehicle!
I love mine and I've had it since '04!

Please don't compare GM to ford...not even close.
Denali 6.0 to 2006 or 6.2L 2007+, great torque.
AWD- very stable platform
Dependable
No Self leveling problems.
My 2004 is ready to trip 100K, has the Original Pads & Rotors.
The only issue is a fuel gauge that acts up occasionally near empty.
Interior looks very good.
My first 2000 Yukon XL was sold to a friend who just sold it with 195K on it and had some wear on the drivers seat.
Put Mobil 1 in it and enjoy.

My wife and I love my "02 Yukon XL Denali, great power, lots of room, AWD, I love the air suspension, great winter time rig that handles great in snow even without chaining up or studded tires, and all the bells and whistles you could want!!
The only negatives for me about this truck is the AWD not selectable 4 wheel drive and the lack of ground clearance, but then again I didn't buy this truck for off roading so I can't complain or else I would have bought a truck!! This is really for my wife to drive anyways (took her a bit to get use to such a big rig but now she loves it!) and to do the occasional towing of our boat and 23' toyhauler and whatever else we need, which is does great with all of those things!! Heck, it even loves rallying up sand dunes as well!!:)
Get the Denali, your wife and kids would love it!!

Man, how can you compare a fuckin' Ford Expedition to a Denali?
*caresses his Denali* It's okay, he didn't mean it. He just doesn't know any better.
Anyway, I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend and what you REALLY want. I just bought a 2003 Denali and I am sooooo satisfied it's insane. Just how much luxury you want? Denali is leather everything, heated seats, bose sound system, the list goes on and on. The mileage difference between the 5.3 and the 6.0 is very marginal, and I honestly would not consider it as a deciding factor. If you plan on using all 3 rows of seats, then get the XL, because the 3rd row seat in the GMT800 platform SUV are not the most comfy; there is very little headroom.
