Need speed! Would like to hear opinions & pros/cons: Superchargers vs. Turbos.

If you need speed get a fast car not a 8000lb truck. Sorry but it's true.

I always find this response funny. Why ask why? Clearly a sports/muscle car is made to go faster but some folks just want to sup-up their 8Klb SUV's and why......why ther F not. I know my truck will never run 9's but that's not the point. I don't like cars and someday I'd like to get my truck to go as fast as it can. i don't even drive fast AT ALL I just like to know I can and would like to occasionally smoke the unsuspecting ricer in my 8Klb SUV. I see this response a lot when people are asking about performance parts for these trucks and really, it's a lame response because fast is fast. 130+ in a 8Klb SUV is pretty damn fast, is it 200+ in a SLR no but that's not what we/I'm into ....... so that is my rant for the month. I apologize and it is not so much directed at you personally as much as to the response in general which has been made by many folks...........thank you for your time.....carry on:mexsmoke:

My Hoe is fast!!!
On a big ass suv I say a roots-style supercharger. If you have a rcsb 2wd pickup, turbo. Check out the new magnusen tvs1900, same kit I plan to install on my yukon once I get some throw away monies.
Yes you can

Supercharger to help get our heavy suvs off the line and moving quicker. The boost from twin screws and roots style s/c start from low rpms and build a nice flat torque curve. A centrifugal s/c and turbo don't have the lowend torque like roots and twinscrew s/c. On a lighter vehicle, I'd say go with a turbo or centrifugal. The power potential is greater at higher rpms. But on our big SUVs, I'd go twin screw or roots s/c. Chistoso has a Whipple, which is a twin screw design. I'm running a Magnacharger, which is a roots-style. Both are great units and have insant torque off the line.

my dream for the silverado would be to put a twin screw SC and then a turbo on each side.

I understood from reading that the IAT is higher on a whipple because the Magnacharger has some type of cooler on it?

Most well designed supercharger systems will incorporate a heat exchanger to keep the intake air temperatures down. The cooler and denser the air is the more power the truck will make, higher iat's can cause all kinds of gnarly stuff with too much timing. Methanol injection will dramatically drop the intake air temps, I plan to run both a heat exchanger as well as a healthy dose of water meth. Consider the heat exchanger to be the supercharger's radiator:

Good info. What else will I need w/ the charger; immediately? And what can wait? ex, tranny build, injectors ... ???

just chiming in here, where can i go to read info on the different types of SCs (preferably all in one place)
There's a huge sticky over at pt.net regarding the different forms of forced induction which covers the pros/cons of each.

That looks like the W2W kit, I heard there not around anymore but I know STS makes a rear mount turbo kit

Yeah that is Kyle's set up. Kinda overkill, don't think the engine is able to take all that is thrown at it.

I'd say turbo less strain on the motor more power per lb of boost and you can run more boost out of them. If you are worried about lag use a smaller turbo. If you want more power use two small turbos. A S/C may take you off the line but by the time you shift to third gear he will see nothing but tail light.

You need to take into account the powerband of these trucks, man. They are big, heavy, and generally pretty damn slow. Getting a 6500lb SUV up and going is a tough task, one that is made even more difficult when you take turbo lag into account. You trade off max horsepower for quicker spool up when you switch to a smaller turbo (or turbos), so really what is the difference? I'd rather have the immidiate low end grunt. A supercharger makes better power in the lower RPM range to get these things moving...and with the right tune (cough cough JENNA and JUSTIN cough cough) the torque curve is flat enough that I highly doubt you'd get walked once you shift into 3rd.
Not saying turbos are slow by any stretch, those STS kits are wicked on the Silverados....I just think that a s/c is better suited to the SUV crowd.
