Some call it the circular lug plate? Is it pressed into the bearing????

Lately I've had nothing but a bunch of questions/problems for this board....sorry

It's the entire axle shaft right? Why do you want to remove it? Is it to replace lug studs?

The lugs are pressed into the hub... you can hit the old one out with a hammer. To get the new one in just take the lug and slide it in... take a few washers, gease them and the threads of the new lug. Stack the washers and then using the lug nut tighten the lug till it sits flush with the back of the back of the hub plate.

One of my studs stripped out inside the stud plate....now it just fucking rotates...gotta replace it for a new one

I was thinking this was the part I could get to replace them?

If you have to pull the Axle out then you need to open up the diff carrier and pull the C-clip off to be able to slide the axle out.

They do sell oversized studs for that purpose. The threads are the right diameter but the part that goes into the hub is slightly larger.

Its not an Adapter... its part of the Axle.

I do want to remove it if I could but I can't man...tried to grab the back of the stud with grips, plumbers wrentch, pipe wrench..nothing will grab that bastard because the lug is on so tight

So that's why im wanting to take the whole stud plate off and replace it with a new one

Ok look, hit it with a hammer from the front and that should push it loose towards the back and then you should be able to pull it out from the back of the axle.

Look at the pic again. There's a TIGHTENED FREAKING ASS nut attached that I was using to pull the stud into the stud plate my man

The back of the stud is smooth, no grip on the backside. I tried grabbing that sh!t with everything I got.

Just so you can see it, the part you are referring to is in fact part of the axle shaft.

http://nationaldrivetrain.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/media/736242XR.jpg

Couple of options to help you take that stud out:

Is the lug nut snugged up to the axle or do you have some room in between the washers/lug and the axle? If you have room, try to get a hack saw or drimmel in there and start chewing away at the stud.

Have you tried getting some vise grips on the front side of the stud to break the lug nut loose?

Thanks for the pic of the axle, that make sense now - so I'd need a new axle if I couldn't get a bigger stud in..that's wonderful

Got it out finally...thank god. I have 12 front studs too, and they are slightly bigger than the rears. Maybe because of increased pressure and heat? I dunno but I'm going to try and fit one in that rear stud plate because it might be slightly bigger now ..not sure.

Would heating up the stud plate with a heat gun do any good in reinstalling a new stud? Would that weaken the stud plate?

My stud hole appears to be slightly bigger in that the original notches from the factory installed stud are not there inside the hole. So I was thinking maybe heating would expand the metal slightly and pull in the stud?

BOSS

chistoso
05-31-2009, 02:03 PM
That I dont know. I would assume heat would weaken the steel. If the hole is bigger than the stud Knurls you should get a bigger stud (the knurls)

Boos, heating the plate you are talking about with a heat gun will do absolutely nothing. IMHO it will not make it anywhere near hot enough.

Why cant you install an OEM like stud?

I can install the OEM stud size, when I line it up it doesn't go straight in so I'll need to pull it in again which is a good thing - meaning the hole in the stud plate isn't too large or anything....

.. it's just that I'm weary of this shit having had it happen on me now, I'd hate to hear a clunk and watch my wheel fly by.

The OEM studs won't press all the way in, they only get about halfway into the stud plate with my cheater bar. I don't want to put anymore into the cheater bar for fear of this hapenning again to be honsest ....

OK. Boss try this.

Use the lug nut youve been using, but turn it around. You want the flat side pressing onto the axle shaft. this will aid in pulling the stud in.

If that doesnt work, use 2 lug nuts but them together and then attempt to draw the stud in.

Take video if you can so i can see what youre doing.

B

Sepiroth
05-31-2009, 10:46 PM
Yea what caused the other one to strip out was the use of the wrench and opposing forces. I mean you're trying to draw the stud in while at the same time trying to use the knurls as a hold down while twisting the lug nut on. Two forces and somethings gonna give.

IMHO, an impact and some air pressure would have made the job go way way easier. But, in a pinch, what are you gonna do.

It would be wise to not drive too far when you reinstall your wheels. Install your wheels then after about a days driving, but no more than 50 miles, check the torque of the lug nuts. Pay special attention to the studs you replaced.

Figured it out BTW. You MUST use washers that will fit the entire length of the stud. The stud gets thicker at the end after the threads (see video) and the flat side of the nut almost can pull the stud through till that thick end starts poking through. What happens is the nut pushes up against the thick part of the stud coming through, and the thick part obviously has no threads but the nut gets stuck on the thick part before you thread out.

NOW I AM A STUD GURU LOL!!! :party33:
